  1. I love this project Deb – so clever. I’ve embraced mason jars lately beyond canning because they’re so simplistic and fun. I might have to visit Johann Fabrics and find some burlap scraps – looks fun to work with.

Hope you have a Great weekend!

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Carole!
Thanks so much! They were really fun and easy to make… What took the longest was deciding on a fabric theme. Keep me posted if you make some. I wanna see them.
      Happy Friday!
      Deb

  2. Adrienne says:

How creative you are! Your tree will look wonderful, I’m sure, and you’re quite the crafty designer. Great work!

  3. Joan says:

Very inspired by your super creativity! I did some embroidery hoops and now onto this – yea a new fun thing for decorating this year and I have most of the supplies – even better. I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas. God bless.

  4. Marilyn Collins says:

Lovely project. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas.
    Marilyn and family

  5. Dori Troutman says:

    Deb,

What a perfectly fun and easy Christmas craft. This will so perfect with my little grand-girls and I just “happen” to have a ton of jar lids too! (Smile!) Thanks for sharing… I’m going to give it a try next week!

    Big hugs,

    Dori

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Dori,

Oh goodie! I can’t wait to see them! I got to thinking later on that lace or doilies would make a pretty center too so the light can shine through on the tree.
      Holiday blessings!
      Deb

  6. Susan says:

Very artdy….vlever5 using canning lids. ..would nevervuse mine unkess thry were rusty, because uoh can reuse canning lids again. But i love the idea of a tree made out of trash or scraps. Clever idea….

  7. Meredith Williams says:

These ornaments are so sweet! I rarely have time to craft this time of year but these look do-able in a small block of time! Thanks so much for the idea Deb! Merry Christmas to you and your family and your corgi boy!

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hey Meredith!
I hear ya on finding extra time for crafting this time of year. But these truly are simple and go together so fast with a fun reward at the end! Merry Christmas to you and yours my dear!
      xo Deb

  8. Nicole Christensen says:

Merry Christmas, Deb! Love this post. This is the perfect kind of craft to do with a Farmgirl Sisterhood Chapter. I’m keeping this in mind for my chapter next year. Thanks for sharing it! Farmgirl Hugs, Nicole (Suburban Farmgirl)

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Merry Christmas, Nicole! Thanks so much! You are right about this being a fun craft to do with a Farmgirl Sisterhood Chapter! Great idea. 🙂
Best wishes for a lovely holiday season to you and your sweet family!
      Hugs! xo

  10. Catherine says:

I love this but how do you get the middle of the lid out?

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Thank you, Catherine. The middle of the lids pop out easily when you take them off of the jar. These are canning jars that you can buy for putting up produce or crafting.

Hi, Deb! I just discovered (again!) MJF’s site when my sister gave me a gift subscription. I was perusing the bloggers, and saw “Beach”! That’s me ♥ I grew up near the south shore beaches on Long Island, NY, and then lived on the coast south of Boston for over 25 years. I’m now retired in central Virginia and caregiver to my 88 year old mom. I have many friends all over the world, not just acquaintances but real friends, with whom I correspond on a regular basis. Yes, we use text and email and …, but we also write letters, send cards, mail encouragements and greetings! A letter is forever! Even my college attending nephews love to receive mail and encouragement and love from me and Grandma! I love your notecards and thank you for offering them! This is my favorite season 🙂 Happy and blessed Thanksgiving, Deb, to you and your family – miss your area of the country, but it is true that we are Farmgirls at heart!

  3. Carol Lammi says:

Love your newsletter! I have learned so much & you always have a positive attitude!
    Thanks, thanks, thanks!

  4. Carleen says:

I still send cards….I send cards for all the holidays ….I send them because I just think its nice to get something nice amidst the bills….HAPPY THANKSGIVING….

  5. Sue Rhea says:

Great idea! I love the cards and I know anyone receiving them would certainly appreciate it. Have a blessed holiday!

    Sue

  6. Nancy C Jones says:

What really thrills me about getting a handwriitn note is that sweet person took time to write and express her love and compassion for me at a time that was needed in my life. My husband is a pastor and very often all attention is for him when I am in need
Lonliness overwhelms me and I just need a small note to say, “I am thinking and praying for you.”. Your notecards are beautiful! Just to see the beautiful picture would perk me up.

  7. bobbie Calgaro says:

Receiving cards and letters was and is always a treat. Be it pen pals many years ago or friends spread across the USA. I still try to keep the tradition alive although I admit that email makes it so easy to just type away. But I still love a hand made card. PS If I don’t win can I buy a set? I’m lovin your pictures!

  8. Carol Peterson says:

I Love autumn. I Love the colors and textures, the brisk air, the warmth of gatherings. I Love to collect my thoughts, express them in words, and pen them to those I hold dear. My family kindly gave me a computer card program so that I can personalize my cards and share GOD’S Love. I would Love to share your beautiful card selection with the special people in my life.

  9. Dorothy Sparks says:

I love to send cards of encouragement or just a hello to my family and friends. I have a few Aunts who are not on the internet and while phone calls are nice they tell me it is a joy to get the mail and find a card or letter. I love the selection you have and would like to share them. Thank you.

  10. Rowena says:

Reading your blog makes me smile because just this morning I made a list of people I wanted to send a special note to in the mail. This time of year does help make me even more grateful for those precious people so far away that I remember but just don’t get to see them anymore. Thank you for such a pleasant affirmation of the beauty around us that we can’t help but share!

  11. I sent a card last Saturday as a matter of fact. I’d rather send birthday greetings to family and close friends by USPS rather than email. A note or letter can be cherished and remind me to be thankful for the one who sent it.

  12. Mary Lou Wilson says:

I love the quote by Phyllis Theroux and agree wholeheartedly. After my husband and I got married, I kept my parents and his updated on our whereabouts and activities with cards and letters. That was before cell phones. It was a heart connection as well as informing. I always felt that it was a visit, and I could feel their presence while being far away. I still take time to send cards, letters, and “love boxes” to my daughter and grandchildren who live in Hawaii. I feel the love connection while doing so. A text message with “ur loved” is always appreciated, but doesn’t constitute a visit that pen on paper does.

  13. Love, love your cards. I still send card for occasions, but I also send cards for no reason. Just a note to brighten someones day. Even my grand children love getting cards. But, boy oh boy! They don’t teach cursive in school anymore. So good luck, kids these days can’t read it, so you must print. Sad, sad that beautiful hand writing is going away!

  14. Donna says:

We all have busy lives, so in this day and age, it’s easier and faster to write a quick email rather than personally handwriting something. It really means a lot when someone sends you a card. It gives that extra personal touch that the person that sent the card took that extra time because they genuinely thought of you.

  15. Kathryn Rogers says:

My sister and I enjoy finding unique cards to send to each other. We send cards for all occasions. And sometimes just because. I just took a class in making embroidery cards. Just sent one out the other day. I think it is sad that people don’t take the time for letter writing. It is a lost art, but not for me. I will continue sending my cards and letters.

  16. june says:

So much of today’s mail is catalogs, junk mail and bills. It’s such a thrill to receive something actually hand written that is addressed to just you.

  17. Ellen Lehman says:

I love sending and receiving note cards. Especially ones made by the sender. I love making note cards as well. All my recipients remark how much it means to them. Keep up your lovely photo shoots. I love every picture you have shared on this site.

  18. Hi,

I look forward to opening my email to find that I have an entry from Mary Jane’s Farm! I love your commentaries on everyday things! Feels like you are sharing with all of us…. and staying grounded!
    Thank You,
    MJ Walsh

  19. Susan Aberenthy says:

I love the cards that someone has spent time to pick out just for you, and the art of handwriting is so beautiful…It expresses that you are WORTH the time!
Receiving the card makes me feel like it was a touch of the person, like a hug!!!!

  20. Pam deMarrais says:

It is such a treasure to receive a handwritten note, especially when it is not a special occasion. It lifts a person’s spirits to show that you will take the time out to share your thoughts.

  21. Kristy says:

A pretty card can be displayed. I tuck them into the edges of picture frames, under the edges of my kitchen cabinets, peeking out from behind mirrors. When they fall down, I usually replace them with new ones, but sometimes not. Currently I have a Valentine from last winter, a five month old birthday card from my granddaughter and another one from my grandson. But I also display notes, snapshots, leaves and pinecones. They keep me inspired.

  22. Carrine says:

I love getting cards especially from my grandma and grandpa. I love that it seems so personal, cause it is hand written. At least when I write a card/letter it takes time. I love and appreciate they took the time to send me a note 🙂 so special

  23. cindy hill says:

While living in Germany, our 4th grade teacher connected each of us to another 4th grader in the US so that we could write to each other. That first start of letter-writing has led to many years of sending letters to family and friends. And now I send over 30 postcards to my great-nieces and nephew, brothers and sister, and many friends whenever my husband and I travel in the United States and especially when we are in other countries. How exciting to get a stamp from Iceland!

  24. Lady Bauer says:

I love handwritten notes and letters. One of my favorite things is to pull out the storage box and re-read them. It takes me back in time to days gone by. The memories are so vivid when you can read a message from the past.

  25. Nanette Boots says:

I always look forward to your posts, Deb. I am a Beach Girl at heart. “Snail Mail” is still the best, and I always try to send a few notes out. Anyone who gives me a gift or a gift of they time, gets a handwritten thank you. People say they don’t have time, well I don’t either, but I do make time. I firmly believe in random acts of kindness, and a thoughtful letter or note is tops on my list! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

  26. Tess S. says:

Thank you, Deb, for having this giveaway! Your cards are beautiful! I just feel that sending a card or letter the old-fashioned way gives people something to look forward to. It is an uplifting moment in the day to see something hand-written in the mail. I just had a birthday and getting a few cards in the mail instead of an email was so heart warming. I truly enjoy sending and receiving!!!

  27. Mary Rauch says:

But how are we to send you nice cards and notes if we don’t know your name and mailing address?

  28. Sandy says:

I enjoy surprising a friend with a handwritten note because I know how happy I get when I receive one. It’s definitely a dying art.

  29. Sandi says:

What a lovely idea Deb! Every word is true, I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t be thrilled to receive a special card, just for them, in the mail! Thanks for the offer and Happy Thanksgiving. Sandi on the Cape

  30. CJ Armstrong says:

I have always been one to send cards and handwritten letters as I just enjoy that “personal” touch. I make cards myself and love to share them with others.
I am delighted beyond words when I receive a card or letter, actually written and signed by a human person, in the mail. They generally come when I really need encouragements or to have my day brightened. I trust that when I send them out they are carrying the same messages to their recipient!

Your cards and beautiful and I would love to be sharing them with others!
    Thanks for the opportunity!
    CJ

  31. Becky Treahy says:

I love to send and receive, cards. The beauty about them is that , not only has the time been taken to send your thoughts, you can read them over and over. I miss the times before computers when writing was an art. I have boxes full of beautiful sentiments from friends and family. Some of my favorites are from my kids do course… All those mothers’ day cards, & the ones before they could even write their names….

Your cards are absolutely gorgeous, & I would be honored to be able to send them to friends & family.
    Becky in Orem, UT

  32. Sharon Elaine says:

Love your Fall cards – I create my own with nature photos I’ve taken. My favorites are flowers, birds, mountains and streams – all seasons. The Smoky mountains and The Outer Banks of NC are some of my favorite places. Never gave up sending cards and I prefer them to emails. Thanks for the opportunity to enter your giveaway.

  33. Rebecca Knocke says:

    Good Morning!

My mother is 84 years old and still writes cards and letters to family and friends. I often tell her she should write short stories because she has such a way with telling others special things she wants to share. Family and friends tell us how much they look forward to her letters. Birthday cards, etc. are also going out daily from our home. Mom looks forward to our mailman as she loves handing him her little bundle of love to go to those that are fortunate to be on her list. She is an awesome lady.

  34. Cathy R says:

I don’t scrapbook but really enjoy making the birthday cards I send to my family and friends from my photos and old greeting cards that I can part with. Your photos make awesome cards and I was the lucky winner of the flower cards you gave away! Had to put some of them in my keepsake box! Thanks for your generosity! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

  35. Card Giveaway entrant! I really like that sending a physical card in the mail gives you a record or memory to keep of that person – their handwriting, their note to you, and it’s now such a surprise. I still have hand-written notes from my mom and grandma and they mean the world to me. Thanks!

  36. Susan says:

    Deb,
I strive to send handwritten cards and letters, but always need reminders like a birthday or special occasion to send them. My favorite to receive is always an impromtu note from a friend, so I want to make a more conscious effort to send them “just because I was thinking of you!”.
Thanks for the opportunity to win some of your beautiful cards.
    Susan

  37. Marilyn Collins says:

I love getting a letter or note in the mail. There is nothing like cuddling up in a comfortable chair and savoring over the letter or note. You cannot do that with an e-mail.
    Marilyn

  38. Joan Collins says:

A letter or note to read is so comforting to receive. it shows you that a person took the time to sit and write down their thoughts and feelings.
    Joan

  39. Tamera Marti says:

I love sending out personalized cards and letters to people that I care about because it let’s them know that I care about them, and that they are special to me. I know that the mail will brighten their day, and it makes me smile thinking about that. Receiving happy mail is far and in between but it makes my heart all warm and fuzzy! Thanks for this awesome give away!!

  40. Marion Collins says:

Receiving a letter or note in the mail is a treat these days. I cherish having a friend or family member send me a message through the mail. I can read it over and over in the comfort of my home and not have everyone read it on Facebook, twitter, etc.
    Marion

  41. I exchange letters with a woman I worked with almost 15 years ago. To take the time and sit down with pen and paper I feel shows that person that you really care.

  42. Mary Pitman says:

I have always loved greeting cards, receiving them and sending them. One friend said I was an ‘encourager’, because of sending cards to those who might just need a ‘pick-me-up’…….and as others have said, nothing beats a nice, sweet, REAL paper card, telling you the person took the time to show you how they are thinking of you, by making time to sit down and perhaps write a note or just sign a card that has the right sentiment. In my immediate family, we have sent cards to each other for birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions.

  43. Rebecca Ann says:

I just turned 58 but I can still see my precious grandmother’s home made cards. A sweet little note with a picture of a bird, flower or a poem written especially for me. I cherish the memories of being loved so very much. I look at my hands now and I see hers. My prayer for my grandchildren is that they too may feel the love that even death cannot take away long after I am gone.Everyone’s hand writing is unique, cards help us realize that and help us know love is like that as well.

  44. Diana says:

    gardenthymewithdiana.com
Great post. I agree handwritten notecards are the best. Love your pictures.

  45. Peggy says:

Your cards are very beautiful. I really miss receiving cards and hand written letters. That is a part of my past that I won’t let go of. I still send cards for any reason and always send special Christmas cards. It is sad when each year the return Christmas cards become fewer because people don’t want to pay the price for a stamp or take time from their busy lives.
Not long ago, I bought stationary and used a nice pen to write letters to friends and family, no one returned a hand written letter. I love writing letters and cards and will continue sending them because it makes my heart feel good.
    Happy Thanksgiving

  46. Ellen says:

Deb you did it again! Beautiful Cards. You have a great talent. I love to send cards to my grand children, They love getting mail, and sending it. Its a special feeling, inside when you send or receive snail mail. To know some one was thinking of you always lifts my spirits. Especially these past few months. Thanks for offering this give away. Happy Thanksgiving!

  47. Jodie says:

Deb! Beautiful! Those cards are just plain fun, warm, and beautiful. Great eye! I love the familiar penmanship. I love that you know you were in someone’s thoughts as you receive snail mail in an instant gratification, texting world. I can barely make it inside my house before I’ve opened and devoured every word of a hand written note. I love looking back at those notes. I have notes/cards from my very special grandmother from years before she passed. I have notes from my baby sister when I went off to college and she was but a fifth grader back at home. And on and on. Mine are in a box, but I think I’m gonna find me a cute vintage suitcase!

  48. Linda Hickman says:

Such lovely pictures! I agree that we have lost touch with one another in the old-fashioned, look what I found or (better yet) made for you. A personal, hand-written letter or note creates a different sort of memory than a text message containing incorrect verbiage.

  49. Krista says:

The amazing part about relating to your story is the fact that I actually received a hand written card from one of my fellow farmgirls in the mail today and ran straight in the house to open it before anything else! You really do get excited to receive that old-fashioned snail mail. I enjoy sending old-fashioned cards because it allows me to be creative and keep things personal. It means so much more to eliminate the technology and let others know that you really are there and thinking of them by taking time to write them.

  50. Karen K. says:

I love cards and letters snail mail style! I’m the card coordinator at my local Community Bible Study group – it’s one of my favorite ways of serving. Love your beautiful cards!

Fall Fury

2015-10-24 001 2015-10-035 resize edit

Dear Sisters,

Happy November from the shorelines! Fall sure is a busy time of year isn’t it? Nesting season hits hard and before you know it you’re in a fall fury trying to get everything done inside and out before Old Man Winter arrives. Thank goodness there are so many wonderful distractions to help us slow down and enjoy the abundance of harvest season. Fall festivals, apple picking, pumpkin patches and corn mazes call us back to the farm and if you’re lucky enough to live in a hot-spot like New England, leaf-peeping is always a must! Get ready. We’re on fire this year! Continue reading

  1. Cindy says:

Absolutely breathtaking !!!! What a beautiful area! My wonderful husband and I happily married now. For 32 years!! Also from Reno!! Well although we lived in Sparks for the last 16 years ! We followed our COUNTRY DREAM ! And now live outside of Boise ! Idaho! On our 26 acre farm! Chickens, dogs! Cat! Goats and horses! Too! EIEiO ! We have been here two years now and go to Reno every couple of months for various reasons! Our grandson is at UNR! Miss it sometimes but we are WELL adjusted now and with only being 6hours away from Sparks, it’s ok! Pi don’t think we would ever move back! We have found such a different ! Country peaceful lifestyle here! You are also surrounded by such a different environment than Reno! toooo many people there now ! Anyway! beautiful photos! Soak up the gorgeous beauty that surrounds us noW!!! Your country sister,Cindy

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Cindy!
We lived in Sparks too off of Vista Lane for the last ten years before we moved east. Loved it but it’s a different world. The high dessert will always be a part of me… It’s where my ” wild spirit” and love of nature come from. But, New England and the ocean speak to a different part of my soul and I’m so grateful to know both worlds so intimately.
I agree, Reno has grown beyond belief, but it’s still a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family. So much recreation in the Sierra Mountains and Lake Tahoe to enjoy. But the disappearance of small family farms over the years have given way to huge development as you know. But, you an still see cows on McCarran Blvd when you drive by! Enjoy your new country life! Hugs!
      Deb

  2. Susana says:

I know exactly what you mean….I love the fall… The colors so vibrant and the smells of it strike you down if your driving. I wish thry had pull over sights ehere you coukd get out of your car judt fir a photograph…cant get amy photos when your driving! I love it when I see all four shades…
…red. Green. Crandberry and orange…that’s glorious! I wonder if we will see these same shades in heaven, because there’s no death there! It must be the artist in us that these colors make us so dizzy with euphoria and excitements. Or is it that I’m not getting enough vitamin. D as fall seems to bring on death as well as depression. For me. The colors of fall always excite my brain! Love it, and im going to collect some leaves!
    Susans

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Susana,
Fall can bring on feelings of sadness for some people. My hubby suffers from SAD ( seasonal affect disorder) but he treats it with medication. I take a prescribed dose of Vitamin D every Saturday to keep my sunshine-y disposition from giving into gray moods too.
You can always have your levels checked at the Dr to see if you’re low. Enjoy the leaves Susana!
      Hugs,
      Deb

  3. Dori Troutman says:

Oh my goodness, Deb. I cannot get over the gorgeous colors. This year I thought our colors in Tennessee were beautiful but they just don’t compare to the New England colors. I’ve got to see them someday.

Your pictures are just fantastic. I love the photo of your Mom – it is beautiful. And of you and your hubby!

    Big hugs,

    Dori

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Well what are you waiting for? I know a great BnB by the sea in Plymouth! Grab Eldon( or Andrea) and come on up for a visit during peak leaf season sometime! We would love it!
I finally got happy about fall! 😉
      Big hugs,
      Deb

  4. Bonnie ellis says:

The beautiful trees is what New England and Minnesota have in common. The colors are outstanding. Your family is so nice, and what a cute hubby. The pictures are great. Thanks Deb.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Bonnie! It has been a lovely fall here and I have to agree, my family IS nice! Ha! We are happy to share! Thanks for your note! xo Deb

  5. Marilyn Collins says:

These photos are breathtaking. The leaves in my neighborhood are not too colorful.
    Marilyn

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Marilyn,

Well, I’m happy we could bring some fall color your way! Glad you enjoyed the tour. Thanks for your note.
      Blessings,
      Deb

  6. Vivian Monroe says:

I love the fall colors they remind me of jewels, God’s jewelry on the trees and sprinkled on our paths. Just beautiful. 🙂 Be BLessed and enjoy fall. Neta

  7. Laura R. says:

Hi Deb, I too have enjoyed the show this year, here in NY. Just spectacular. Words can’t describe that rich colorful beauty. Congrats on taking some great pix of it!!!!

  8. Krista says:

These are such beautiful pictures! The changing of leaves seemed to be a bit behind here this year as well. Now that they have changed I just can’t seem to get enough! We recently took maternity pictures and the background was those beautiful colored leaves. I haven’t received the pictures back yet so I am not sure how they turned out.
Our old house had a large tree that would lose tons of leaves in the fall. I miss this so much. There is something so wonderful about spending time outside with the crisp weather raking up leaves and then letting your dogs crash through them! I feel that fall time brings many memories and bonding opportunities. Thanks for sharing such beautiful pictures of your fall fury.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Krista,
Thank you. I’m so happy you enjoyed them. I felt the same way about not getting enough of the color this year! Maybe because I know what’s next! ( Bareness ) But that has it’s own beauty too! I agree, fall is a wonderful time for gathering and making new memories.
      Thanks for your note!
      xo Deb

  9. Joan says:

Thanks again for a wonderful posting – love your pic’s!!! We don’t have a lot of different types of trees BUT what we do have have come out in all their glory, because we have not had snow yet. Every time we even look out the window, we shake our heads in wonder of what has happened in our own yard, never before have we had such beauty. God has shown us some of natures best. Love your Mom’s painted leaves, before reading the caption, I was totally captivated with their beauty, wondering what trees they came from, still they are beautiful. God Bless.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Joan!
I’ll be sure to tell my mom how much you enjoyed her painted leaves. There are too many native deciduous trees in the New England Hard Forest to name here, but I believe her leaves are from the Sugar Maple trees that grow wild around the pond where we were leaf-peeping! Blessings to you too, Joan!
      xo
      Deb

  10. joan marie Brown says:

Spectacular. That sums it up this autumn. Flaming colors abound in Bucks County PA. thanks for those colorful photos from New England.

Apple Stuffed Acorn Squash with CRAISINS

2015-10-22 001 2015-10-028

Dear Sisters,

I hope you are all settling into fall and enjoying the bounty of harvest season. It’s cranberry season here in New England and I’m feeling inspired to try some new recipes using whole local cranberries, or craisins. Are you a craisin lover? I am CRAZY for craisins! I love adding them to breads, salads, granola, oatmeal, and trail mix.  Ya see, I’m not a fan of raisins. Never have been; so I substitute craisins for raisins every time! Today I’m sharing a delicious acorn squash recipes stuffed to the gills with Autumn goodness. And craisins, of course! Continue reading

  1. Beth Havens says:

Sounds delish! Here we stuff it with meatloaf! your basic one dish meal. 🙂

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Beth,
Meatloaf would be good too. My mom used to stuff zucchini with ground beef in a tomato based sauce with melted cheese on top. I like the sweetness of the acorn squash with the brown sugar added to the fruit, it’s almost like a desert!
      Deb

  2. Terry Lopez says:

Now this recipe sounds like a real keeper! I think I will definitely try it.

  3. Dori Troutman says:

    Deb,

This recipe looks so good. I’m really eager to try it. I’m not much for baked squash but I’m thinking I’ll like this! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

    Hugs,

    Dori

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hey Dori,
I think you’ll like it, and if you’re a fan of squash, the filling alone would be amazing on oatmeal!
      Hugs!
      Deb

  4. Nicole Christensen says:

    Hi Deb!
I am like you…I am not a fan of raisins, but love craisins. I think I will try substituting them more often. Thanks for the inspiration, and I think I will be trying this recipe very soon! Farmgirl Hugs, Nicole (Suburban Farmgirl)

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Nicole!
Let me know how you like it! I just made apple crisp with cooked whole cranberries…;) The cranberries turned the whole thing hot pink!
      Hugs,
      Deb

      • Hi Deb,

Wanted to log on tonight and tell you I made your stuffed acorn squash recipe tonight. It was great! Thumbs up from us. I served it with a brown sugar sauced meatloaf and for dessert, homemade pumpkin bread. Great fall meal. Your recipe (I made it how you made it, with cranberries) is a keeper.

        Farmgirl Hugs,
        Nicole

        • Deb Bosworth says:

Oh, I’m so glad you gave it a try, Nicole! Now, I want to try your brown sugar sauced meatloaf…! That sounds wonderful.
          Hugs,
          Deb

  5. Dot says:

Sounds yummy! I usually stuff mine with lentils, celery and onions for one of our meatless dinner selections.

Holy Hydrangeas!

2015-10-08 001 2015-10-010

Dear Sisters,

Holy Hydrangeas! How have you been? The past few days have been beautiful here in New England along the shorelines. The skies are clear and there’s a refreshing nip in the air just right for getting some farm chores done. Right now, I’m swimming in hydrangea blooms ripe for harvesting to be used in seasonal arrangements. Come on out to my virtual “plein air”  flower studio and let’s get crafting. I’ve got a bucket of blooms with your name on it! Continue reading

  1. Paula says:

What a creative, beautiful way to use dried corn and hydrangeas! I’m pinning to save in case I have access to hydrangea flowers in the future to make a wreath like yours.

  2. Oh my, Deb. Absolutely beautiful wreath!!!!! I so totally love that.

And you look totally darling in that picture, by the way!

    xoxo

    – Dori –

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Dori,
Thanks so much! I had a ball putting it together and my son was a sweetie to take my picture with my bucket of blooms. Your flowers have been beautiful this month too! Love seeing them on your cart.
      Big Hugs!
      Deb

  3. Susana says:

Im jealous…for three years I have not gotten any flowers on My hydrange bushes. I don’t know why….but it has been very cold these last three winter’s In My area. I cant figure out why I havent gotten any blooms on Mine…..other people In My area dont seem to have any issues. Could I be doing something…wrong? Like.. over watering or under watering them? I miss my hydrangea. Susana

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Susana,
I would go to your nursery and tell them what’s going on. I bet they’ll have some suggestions for you. I had one that was stunted for a few years and I finally moved it into a sunnier spot with better draining soil and that did the trick! Good luck. Deb

  4. Deb – How beautiful! Love the wreath. I love that hydrangea flowers stay beautiful even after they are dried. Great ideas for display.
As for the flies, there’s not much you can do about that. I wouldn’t do anything unless the plants were ill and needed treating, and yours certainly are lovely!
    Farmgirl Hugs,
    Nicole (Suburban Farmgirl)
PS: If Susana isn’t getting any flowers, perhaps she is pruning them too much. They bloom on old wood. 😉

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Nicole! Thanks so much! I’m sure the flies have a purpose for being drawn to those blooms, I just haven’t learned what it is yet. I will report back!
Hugs to you and happy fall!
      Deb

  5. Vivian Monroe says:

WOW everything looks AWESOME. LOVE LOVE LOVE the dried hydrangeas especially since mine didnt even bloom this year. What’s up with that?? Oh well there is always next year. Be Blessed and keep creating beautiful flowers. 🙂 Neta

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Neta!
I’ve had years like that too. Last year was a sparse year for my hydrangeas and this year they were amazing. I take what comes, but I sure miss them on an off year. Great to hear from you! Hugs,
      Deb

  6. These are gorgeous and especially
Love the colors. Soft greens and purples are my favorites. Just curious. What beautiful beach is close by?

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Carol,
Thank you! Sagamore Beach and Scusset beach right at the opening of the Cape Cod Canal on the South Shore of Boston.
      Happy Fall!

Holding On

September 2015 2015-09-014 resize edit

A mix of cultivated and foraged herbs, flowers and foliage from our beach garden.

Dear sisters,

I don’t know what’s wrong with me this year! I’m usually the first one in our humble abode to dive right into fall. I’ve felt the tug of that old familiar nesting instinct kicking in, but I confess I haven’t given in to it completely. How could I possibly get all sappy about the autumn equinox when I’m still holding on to summer? How about you? Continue reading

  1. Right there with you Deb,
this year the weather has caused us to holding on.
My Strawberries & raspberries are still blooming, all in various stages of growth.
Enjoying fresh berries in September. The bees are buzzing around still.
You are not alone Sister… Grace

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Grace,
Glad to hear you still have some delicious berries to enjoy this late in the season. I know you’ll be sewing your lovely aprons and ironing board covers this winter to keep your hands busy! 😉
      Hugs,
      Deb

  2. Oh Deb, you took the words right out of my mouth. I’ve got a major case of the Flower Farmer Blues. Last night we mowed and weeded in the garden and I thought that even in it’s final stages of growth it couldn’t possibly be more beautiful. And I felt like crying. Even though I am physically and emotionally tired, I’m still hanging on.

I do love Fall… but it is definitely not my favorite season. And I think the reason why I sort of dread Fall every year is because I know Winter is right behind it! 🙂 Which seems silly to say as our winters are nothing compared to the REAL winters you get. But the wet, and more wet, and more wet gets to me!

So thankful for your friendship in so many ways but especially sharing this Flower Farming journey we’re on!

    Tight hugs.

    – Dori –

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Well, Dori we did it! One season down! I too am so grateful we have this ” flower farming ” connection and all things farmgirl!
If it wasn’t for MaryJanesFarm, we may have never crossed paths. It’s tough to let go of the flowers but we’ll make it! 🙂
Tight hugs back to you and Andrea!
      Deb

  3. Bonnie Ellis says:

Deb: Living in Minnesota where after a hard freeze (as you know from living in New England) we don’t have anything alive; I think I am hanging onto the beautiful blooms too. We have had rain here at the right time and things are lush and beautiful. Our fall colors are late because of it. I did put up a few fall decorations but it is still in the low 80s here. Enjoy your flowers. You really have a special gift of combining them in such beautiful combinations. Wish we were closer.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Bonnie,
Awe, I wish we were closer too. The fall spirit will find you soon. What choice do we have? Tee He!
      Big hugs,
      Deb

  4. Hedy King says:

Deb, your flowers are lovely, I wouldnt wasn’t them to leave either. I always look forward to your posts. Thanks for sharing

  5. Sharon Elaine says:

This is my first season planting a flower garden that’s packed full of zinnias, beautiful blue bachelor buttons and love in a mist. It will be bigger and better next year.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Good for you Sharon!

I love bachelor buttons. Missed growing them this year. I substituted pincushion flowers for those. I planted them late July an the first one bloomed this weekend. Enjoy your garden and happy planning for next season.
      Blessings!
      Deb

  6. Sheila says:

Eloquently stated! I am feeling a bit cheated now that my summer flowers are disappearing. Next year I will plant more varieties and hopefully some will be “crossover blooms” to get me through the beginning of autumn. Hope to visit your flower market next summer. In the meantime, dream of beautiful flowers…and don’t forget, seed cataloges come out soon.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Howdy Sheila!
It’s hard to say goodbye to the garden isn’t it? One thing you can try is to sow zinnia seeds every couple of weeks, that way you’ll have fresh blooms right up until the first frost. Happy Fall!
      Deb

      • Sheila says:

Thank you, Deb. I hadn’t thought of zinnias and I do so love the cheerful colors. My Mom and Grandma always had them in the garden when I was growing up. You just brought back some great memories for me!

  7. Joan says:

We had a hard growing time this year – late cold and much rain, so nothing did well but now they are blooming like crazy – the fall flowers that is, so enjoying as long as they are here. Love seeing your wonderful pictures of your most beautiful blooms. Maybe next year we will do better. Happy Fall y’all. God bless.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Joan,
Well, there’s always next year, right Joan? Glad you have some September blooms to enjoy too.
      Blessings to you!
      Deb

  8. Wow!
I thoroughly enjoyed your post Deb!!
Fall is my favorite time of year. Down here in San Antonio, we start experiencing cool mornings in Sept—low 70’s are WONDERFUL after months of mornings in the low to mid 80’s—so I wasn’t sure I wanted to stay aboard your lamenting-the-passing-of-flowers train, but when I got to your gracious request to humor you, I did. You absolutely HOOKED ME with “I’ve been ‘in the flowers'”! How refreshing your turn of phrase! Three little words to so succinctly and richly describe your recent existence of being.
I thoroughly enjoyed the ride Deb! Thank you.
    Warmest Regards,
    Carolyn

After a second consecutive brutal winter (as in, record-setting) in the northern Midwest and an extremely delayed spring warm-up, I am absolutely in autumn denial. Thankfully our weather has humored me with a gorgeously summery September: days upon days of sunny weather, mid-70s, and (bonus) low humidity. 😀

I love how your post reads like a Rx drug ad LOL!

I love the meticulous arrangement of the flowers. The wreath has a subtly rustic look that gives it a natural charm. Thanks for sharing this.

    Hi Deb,

It’s gorgeous! Have you seen a picture of the bride with it on? I bet it was beautiful. I’d love to see it. How special that she’ll have that as a keepsake now.

“Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.”
~ Dean Koontz

Dear Sisters,

Did you celebrate National Dog Day this week? I know some of you did because you posted pics of your darling dogs on Facebook. I couldn’t leave Max out of NDD so I joined in too! As I searched our “Max” files on the computer for that ” just right” photo to post I discovered we have ” almost” as many photos of him as we do our kids! Care to join me in a little ” pooch parade?” Continue reading

Oh my, Deb!!! You’ve got me tearing up!!! We lost our last dog, a Jack Russell, last summer. He was 15. Our baby girl, another Jack, we lost two years ago. She was 13. We keep saying “no more dogs! No more dogs!” Our hearts have been broken so many times. We just don’t know if we can take it anymore. We’ve been talking Corgi over the past year…but have held strong. We put up the barrier. But then, I see your little guy and my heart just melts! Don’t do this to me!!!! I shake my head and think “no, no”, but my heart is starting to melt. And I thought I was so tough……..

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Victoria! I’m so sorry for your loss of your beloved Jack Russell’s. It IS heartbreaking. I fear we are about to go through it soon here as my mom’s dog is 12 and he is showing his age much more these days. If you ever were able to open your heart again to another dog, you won’t be disappointed with the Corgi. They are heart-melters for sure! Sending healing wishes and keep us posted if you decide to go for it! xo Deb

  2. Meredith Williams says:

Hi Deb! I loved your pictures!i am the proud Mama of two corgis, a tri female named Indiana Barksalot ( Indy for short) and a red and white male , Finn, who is Indys nephew! I love them both to pieces and even though they live with five other dogs of various sizes, they are the king and queen and everyone knows it. I wouldn’t live without a corgi in the house – they keep everyone in line. Thanks for your great pics and story about Max- it was fun to meet him!

Sweet Summer Surrender at the BEACH

2015-08-02 08.12.10 resize edit (2)

Dear Sisters,

I hope this mid-summer note finds you feeling relaxed and renewed. I pray you’ve had some time to unwind, and just ” be “. Time to “be” without pressing deadlines and to do lists. We just returned from our annual week on the shorelines and oh what a week it was. It was just the dose of Vitamin Sea that we needed to surrender to sweet summer. What’s that you say? ” Take ME to the ocean! ” D.O.N.E.

Let’s encourage him. They were great pictures. Back in my simple high school days I tried to get shots like that. I tried on Cape Cod, Long Island, Newport RI, and Connecticut. Enjoyed myself immensely, but of course I didn’t have particularly good cameras or understand different film types etc.

  2. Deb,

You knew when you wrote this post that you were writing it just for me didn’t you??? Because I really felt it deep in my heart. I just want to be there at that amazing beach.

I love our beach trips on the Florida and Alabama Gulf but it doesn’t have that rugged look that your beach has. And that just looks so awesome to me.

We booked an Anniversary trip to stay a few nights at a resort in Point Clear, AL and I’m so excited. The ocean is just always the ticket for us.

And yes, I know that feeling of not having the kids around. We are now at the stage where we miss our grand-kids when they aren’t with us! Ha! 🙂

Big hugs to you dear friend and thank you so much of this very amazing of blog posts!

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Dear Dori,
One day, you will have to visit us at our beach. We would love it! Glad it touched your heart.
      Big hugs!
      Deb

  3. Cindy says:

Beautiful! Love the peace of the ocean! Very powerful yet so serene! I’m on my farm in Idaho and I miss the ocean! Next year I’m hoping we will visit ! Take care!

  4. Joan says:

AHHHH the joys of the beach!!! I am more relaxed now after ready and viewing your post. Yes great pic’s Dave. God bless

  5. Jennifer says:

Thanks for posting this! It comes at a very bittersweet time in our lives, too – my oldest son is going off to college this coming-up Tuesday morning.

Plus, a bit of serendipity to sweeten it – this week’s video on marieforleo.com is about taking serious unplugged vacation time to rejuvenate yourself!

  6. Laura R. says:

Max, in full surrender mode, priceless !!! He sets a good example, lol.

  7. Pam deMarrais says:

Deb, your writing is exquisite! What a wonderful trip to the ocean and the peace and tranquility that it brings.
Enjoy this season of your life. It is bittersweet, but opens up new horizons!
Have a great rest of the summer!

  8. Denise Ross says:

    Hi Deb
Loved this post. It really struck a cord with me. My two oldest kids are 19 and 17. One is planning on leaving home at the end of next year when he finishes his degree and the other is finishing school this year and is real king about leaving home next year. I’m excited for them but sad for me too. I’m glad I do have my younger son, 9, to have around for a little linger. I’m so aware though of how time goes by so quickly nd really treasuring the times we are all together. I do love alone time with my hubby too though.
Have a fabulous week. By the way I love your hubby’s photos they are fabulous.

  9. Bonnie ellis says:

Deb,I don’t know what it’s like to be at the ocean, but in Minnesota we have 15’000 lakes and many rivers that give the same effect. Your pictures are just wonderful. I chuckled at your dog. Our Alaskan Malamute used to lay with his back to the door in the dead of winter with the same pose. Pure delight.

  10. Deb this looks like paradise. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and the water is honestly about the only thing I miss. I love the south it’s been good to me but lakes are just not the same as that amazing ocean. Thanks for sharing and I really enjoyed those photos.
Glad you had a chance to relax, this was a great way to close the summer season. 🙂

  11. Catherine Carpio says:

Deb, you are a girl after my own heart. I’m a suburban mountain top farm girl at heart but my first love is the ocean. I am currently mourning the summer and the wonderful times at the beach. My home is quiet now. As my daughter studied abroad in Osaka, Japan for a year things were hectic because of her time being 13 hours ahead of mine we would chat around 4ish in the morning! So not much sleep for me. I did have a housemate for the year. My daughter’s university roommate, a study abroad student from China stayed at our house. We had lots of fun and I can cook some authentic Chinese dishes now! My son graduated last May with his Masters Degree in Higher Ed Counseling from CCSU and has his first real job, so he is away and we are all filled with pride. My daughter will graduate in December this year from UMass Amherst with an independently designed degree in Japanese Commerce and Culture. This week a visiting alumni business owner spoke to her Management theories class and her professor passed along an email saying after speaking with her the CEO thinks he has a department in his company that she would do wonderful in, so she is sending her resume and trying to stay focused on doing well for graduation. I am especially proud of both of my kids’ school efforts as they both had learning disabilities since Grade 1. It took my son 11 years to complete his BS Degree and his Masters. It has taken my daughter 10 years ( 4 yrs part time ) to be on track to graduate in 3 months with her BA Degree and a Minor in Japanese. So I am certain that if my kids can do this nearly child can aspire to one day attend college with patience and hard work. They both have tremendous student loan debt but wouldn’t change a thing. They are both really loving and caring young adults. Although I am disabled now I had some wonderfully fulfilling jobs during my career years. I guess at 61 the only thing I can be is grateful for every day on Earth, and hopes for my kids’ happiness in their future adventures. Well I guess I’ve never been called a brief writer so maybe this will count as my application letter to join the farm girls. You all seem to be full of joy and it’s lovely how you so freely share your experiences. It’s refreshing! PS ….. Your husband’ photos are stunning. Thanks for sharing.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Dear Catherine,
Welcome!I’m with you, sister.I am mourning the end of summer too and diving into fall with some indoor projects that have been on hold. I enjoyed reading about your very accomplished children. What peace it must bring you to know they are on their way with an education under their belts. You have every reason to be proud. Thank you for the kind words about my hubby’s photos. I’ll pass the praise along to him. Thanks so much for reading AND writing!
      xo Deb
