The Happy Harvester

“If you tickle the earth with a hoe she laughs with a harvest” ~ Douglas Jerrold

Dear Sisters,

Tis the season to strip the fields, gather in and reap what you have sewn during planting season. Or, put another way…How full is your wheelbarrow looking these days? Is it over flowing with more seasonal goodness that you know what to do with or does it look rather barren and bleak? Either way, you can decide whether you will be the happy harvester or the broken hearted farmer who’s yeild never weighs heavy enough on the happiness scale.

    Deb,
I love your photos of the morning glory! And your sentiments are "right up my alley", too. How much less stress to one if one can count one’s blessings instead of dwelling on the negative. Thank you for the great message.
And, here, too it’s good, just wanted to re-inforce your message.

Thank you! Glad to hear it’s sunny in your skies right now. Thanks for the ‘ re-inforcement too!  Happy Weekend…xo Deb

I have a new favorite grouping of words…beginning with ‘keep your heart open’…….and you know the rest ‘cuz you penned them. EXXXcellent post.

Thank you kindly for the PLEASANT reminder 🙂

LOVE THIS… and now , I too have a new favorite grouping of words! Thanks for the visit Shery… been thinking of you!

  3. Diana Henretty says:

Hey all you farmgirls in the path of Sandy,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you this next week.
We had friends in Montana that had a nursery.
She told us that the trees that were out in the heavy winds, rains, storms were the strongest. The roots were deeper, the trunks were thicker and the
    branches were stronger.
The tress that were sheltered were weak.
We are like those trees, with winds that shakes us and try to break us,
    we are stronger for it!
Your Ozark friend, Diana, Noel Mo.

  4. Hedy King says:

Such a needed post, thanks, Deb. Tired today and it is our first cold, rainy day of fall. Loved the morning glory shots, my favorite climbers. Be safe during the approaching storm.

  5. Pamela says:

Thanks for the encouragement, Deb, and I just have to tell you that I LOVE your pictureat the end. How beautiful you are! Thanks for all your postings.

  6. Joan Marie says:

Hi farm gals at the BEACHES – we’re here in Cape May New Jersey preparing for Sandy. Hope this is NOT as bad as 1962 – but we’ll just have to wait and see. Mandatory evac. Sunday – so we’ve picked the last of the green tomatoes, pulled the cucs and even had time to plant tulip and daffodil bulbs – perfect therapy when we’re under the hurricaine threat! Good luck to all. Joan Marie

  7. Bonnie says:

Deb, I have so enjoyed watching you develop your beautiful flower garden through the year. And how wonderful it has turned out! Your photos have been just perfect!! And your words are always so inspiring. You are appreciated so much. Also loved seeing your lovely photo at the end. It’s so amazing how much we get to "know" you through your blog.
Will be praying for your and your family’s safety along with others in the storms path.

  8. Laura R. says:

Yes, a big storm is a coming and your post was perfect timing. Thanks for the encouragement and beautiful sentiments. We can all use the love to weather the storm and keep happy. We thought Hurricane Irene was a big deal last year here in the Hudson Valley of NY but this one is even bigger ! Keep safe y’all !!

Good positive words for dreary weather heading everyone’s ways!

  12. Lorrie MacKenzie says:

Your post made me smile and laugh! The photos were beautiful but your words were even better. Thank you for reminding me that my response to life is the best medicine of all.

  13. I hope you fared well in the hurricane and are safe and warm. I live in New England too and our shoreline got particularly hard-hit.

I was so happy to have found your blog thorough Deborah Jean’s Dandelion house and wanted to stop by to invite you to join us at the Clever Chicks Blog Hop this week!

It's a FARMGIRL THING!

Ever since I discovered MaryJanesFarm a few years back I am much more in tune with the things that make me tick and those that tickle my fancy too! The best part about being “a farmgirl at heart “is knowing I’m not alone in my ‘ farmgirly-ness’. Whether I’m working on a project at home, out in the garden or off on a road trip, my farmgirl spirit is always with me. I can count on it every time to add an extra dose of surprise and romance to everything I do. Just the other day I went shopping for pumpkins, mums and gourds and ended up falling head over heels in love with a…
Well, you’ll just have to come in for the full story cuz…

You have "days of the week" aprons instead of undies!

  3. carol says:

you might be a farmgirl if

YOUR HEART IS STIRRED TO RAPTURE…..OVER…..
—expanse, seeing the sky kiss the ground
—the vibrant colors of earth and sky and…well, of anything that grows
—textures…. and smells…the dry, cutting roughness of musty hay bails or corn stalks; the silky coat of a cow that carries the scent of "country"; the smooth skin of a veggie that "reeks of just-picked freshness"….
—creatures–large and small living in their corner of the world, fulfilling the reason they were created
–hand-made, seeing the beauty of anything that was touched and handled, designed and formed as an expression of an individual’s unique personality

  4. Debbie says:

This is the best post I’ve read in a long time….lol. I, too, love cows. Once, several years ago at our local fair, I fell in love with a little jersey cow and apparently she loved me too. Unbeknownst to me, she wasn’t secured to her stall and when I walked away from her she followed me through the crowd. So, there I was tooling along through the people and there was this adorable cow following along like a puppy…lol. If I could’ve I’d have brought her home with me.

  6. CJ Armstrong says:

You might be (I know I am!) a farmgirl when:
    – one of your favorite scents is freshly turned DIRT!
    – doing gardening barefoot just makes you giddy!
    – the slobbery smooch of a calf or lamb makes you smile!
    – getting pure joy out of the donkey running to the fence to greet you!
    – receiving "butterfly kisses" from your llama, Rocky, is just the best greeting ever!
    – the down right hard work of farming and gardening gives you such peace and satisfaction at the end of the day when you can finally sit down and rejoice in the day’s accomplishments!
I could go on and on because that is the life I have always known . . .ALWAYS! I’m grateful for the heritage and the life my parents provided us as "farm kids"! GRATEFUL to the tips of my barefoot farmgirl toes and the bottom of my farmgirl heart!
    Thanks Debbie!

  7. Brenda says:

You might be a Farmgirl if seeing your hens come out of the run wings flapping heading straight for you and it makes you smile, laugh and cry almost at the same time. My grandfather was a dairy farmer. I spent a lot of time when I was a young child walking around some really docile "Marys", but one of them was my Auntie. Thanks for the stroll through the barn yard!

I love cows too! I told my granddaughter that whenever you drive past a pasture of cows you have to open the car window and yell "mooooooo." My husband thinks I’m nuts but we laugh and laugh and have a great time.

  12. Shery says:

Hi D-Boz! I sure enjoyed the autumn tour in your neck of the woods. Fall is the most delicious time of year . All the work of the summer is over, the harvest goodies are everywhere and I LIKE hunting up my jacket. Thank you for taking me along for the day.

  13. MaryJane says:

… if you walk into a barnyard and realize you’ve discovered long lost kin … dred souls. Who doesn’t love a cow’s eyes! I always want to kiss a cow when I see one. Does that qualify as an if?

    Hi MJ!

You bet it qualifies! Since I don’t have a cow except for " Mary" will you kiss yours for me?

I love your energy !! Thanks, Deb, for your inspiration. I have loads to do, inside and out. Have to clean and prepare upstairs bedroom of #1 son for #2 son. (#1 son is in guest room as a transition from community college to "sleep-away"). And all my outside gardens need cleaning and transplanting. It’s rainy today in North East, so may have to make progress on inside first !! Thanks again, for the "kick in the pants" Lol. Your decorations and flower arrangements are gorgeous…

Happy Fall Laura! Well, thanks.. Yes, still loads to do but all in good time right?

Enjoy and have fun! Thanks for reading! xo Deb

  2. Raynita says:

Everything is looking so pretty at your place, Deb. I’m working on it here too. It seems like it is taking me longer this year to get my *fall* on. I decorated in front of the chicken house first…lol….glad to know I am in good company here who understands that:) Autumn Blessings, Raynita

Hey Raynita! Thanks so much! It’s taken me a bit too as far as full out decorating goes due to all the painting. Hey, it’s officially fall once the hen henhouse is decorated and that’s done so we could quit right now and call it good! I know I won’t though! LOL! Just enjoy…xo Deb

  3. Julia says:

Lovely as always~ We have has such a wonderful Indian Summer here! Fallish mornings, and summertime days. The tomatoes are happy, as am I, as I didn’t want to have to make green tomato relish this year! Happy Autumn to you my friend!

  4. CJ Armstrong says:

Lots of things happening at your house, mercy me! And, I’ll be over for the pumpkin spiced latte!!
I was finally able to clean my house and get my fall decorations out and that was such a pleasureable thing to do!!
Things are cooling off and since our irrigation water has been turned off we no longer can irrigation so we don’t have to drag hoses all over the property and I have stopped mowing the lawn. The only flowers I have doing well now are snapdragons and they are lovely! Also a bit of "blanket flower".
September finds me still very busy sewing aprons and doing papercraft items for the last couple months of our Farmers Market season which flows right into a Fall craft fair the end of October and a Christmas Bazaar the 1st of December. So I’ll be sewing for a couple more months. . . aprons to be made!
I love fall for the cooler temps, the scents, sounds and "feel" of fall . . LOVE IT!
    CJ

Hi CJ! WOW! You’ve got it goin’ on at your place too! Oh, I bet you’ve been having fun at the Farmers Market and with all of your sewing too! All good fall stuff! My snapdragons are still blooming too.. I think  they like it a bit cooelr as well. You’re a FALL FARMGIRL for sure! Thanks so much for your note! xo Deb

  5. Joan says:

Aren’t we all just such busy farmgirls – lists – always with the lists but they do help keep me together. Yard winterizing – got it started and then after no rain for months – we got rain – YEA!! so back inside I came – had decided to get at the Fall cleaning & decorating – WHEN – I got a surprise – don’t know why but the builder decided to carpet the bathroom & closet – not what I had ordered – SO this week it has all been put to how I had envisioned – YEA!! but that meant EVERYTHING out/off the walls – so lots to do there – now today it was dust EVERYTHING and put it right – a bit more to go because of course I decided some ‘getting items on to the thrift store’ was necessary. During the install, I got busy with some repainting needed in the great room and the kitchen – ahhh much better – got back out to do more fix’n outside. NOW the next task – starting tomorrow – is to completely void the great room of all items – having wood laid in about a week – so my Fall decorating will mostly be Thanksgiving but feel so blessed to be getting the floors we had wanted. Thanks Deb for confirming that LISTS are just part of living. I pray that your Aunt is doing much better and will continue to improve.

Hi Joan! We sure are…Oh boy, you’ve got some fun ahead once your new floors are down… perfect fall project.. Just in time for the holidays! Lots of work, but worth it… It will be so cozy! thanks so much for sharing your list and the prayers… My Aunt is doing well and is cancer free right now!

    xo Deb

  6. Love the burlap curtains, Deb! Cute, Cute, Cute! We’re busy over here decking out for fall, too! Love this time of year! Happy Fall! Your bloggin’ sis, Nicole (Suburban Farmgirl Blogger)

Happy ( New England Fall ) to you!

Rising Tide

Dear Sisters,

I hope this post finds you feeling refreshed from a fabulous farmgirl filled summer and ready to tackle the back to school season.  I’ll admit, I’m in complete denial that school has already started (or is just about too) in most areas. After all, the BEST of summer weather is yet to come! Here on the shorelines that means clear blue skies, no humidity and the anticipation of stealing away for a few more boat rides on less crowded waters. There’s no turning back now. It’s time to trim the sails and head for more structured shores. I’m cruising into this school year on the incoming tide with high hopes for smooth sailing ahead! However, my nautical chart tells me that with two teens in high school ( one still home, the other in school ) the chances for some variable weather and high seas are almost certain in Cape Cod Bay. It’s bye-bye BEACH and back to school for this HOMESCHOOL marm. Land Ahoy!

  1. Joan says:

Oh what wonderful times/memories y’all have and now a whole new life to make more. So proud of you doing the home schooling – it is a huge undertaking but you know how to do it correctly. My grandchildren have been back to school for 3 weeks now, which means I too am back to school – well 3 afternoons a week – that’s about all this ole lady can keep up with. My youngest is in 2nd grade – wheweee they are busy little people but the teacher – a nice young man is getting them rounded in – he really is a very good teacher in may ways. Again thanks for sharing – happy holiday.

Hi Joan! Good Grammy you are for looking after your grandchildren. My mom did a lot of that for us too when our two were little! Enjoy and don’t let’m wear you out too bad! Happy Labor Day! xo Deb

Much love from the West Coast! Cousin Teri

Hi cousin Teri! Great to hear from you here! 🙂 Thanks so much for the kind words…and remember to keep those shoe boxes on hand! You never know what your kids are going to find fun to ‘ play with ‘! Lots of love from the east and hugs to all! Deb

Such kind words my dear Shery…:) brought tear and a smile as I read them. It’s been the joy ride of all time to homeschool our kids for sure and a blessing beyond words really…She possitootly DOES have music in her soul…she sang before she talked!  thank for stopping by my friend! xo Deb

Backyard Blossoms Flower Show

~Where flowers bloom so does hope.

Lady Bird Johnson,

Dear sisters,

Welcome! You’re just in time for the first tour of the day of my Backyard Blossoms Flower Show! Every day, every hour brings something new in the garden and I’ve got a yard full of sunny faces just waiting to greet you!

I don’t remember another time in my life when I have been more ” in the moment” or aware of my ” inner sage” ( other than falling in love or when our children were born

) than the time I’ve spent in my garden this year. I know each leaf, each petal, each bloom intimately. I promise you will too by the end of this post!

Let’s walk (and talk ) among the flowers shall we?

  1. Deb, WOW, your gardens are looking GREAT! I like the idea you did with the tiles for the borders of the beds. I have just been out in mine this morning trying to clean up a bit. Tomatos are looking very scraggly so I did alot of pruning I just couldnt bring myself to pulling them up with little green ones still hanging on to the vines. LOL! Maybe with all the cleaning they will get some fresh air circulating and make me some more of those great tasting maters. HA! Enjoyed looking at all your flowers and will probably go back through and linger a little longer in your gardens. Be Blessed Neta

Hi Neta! My tomatoes look kind of ratty too!! Lots of fruit along with tired yellow leaves…Perhaps I’ll do what you did and give them a little ‘ airing’! Hope it helps! Thanks for the note!!! xo Deb

  2. Julia says:

Lovely! My life has been so nuts the past several months, that I didn’t get seed in the ground in the spring to give me my usual flower display in the summmer. 🙁 And now with the lack of rain and high heat, what I do have is waning. There is always next year.

I have often dreamed of having a cutting garden for people to come too. Maybe someday.

In the meantime, thank you for sharing your beauty, I needed the walk!

Hello dear Julia! So glad you could make the tour! You’ll have your garden one day!!! xo Deb

  3. Country Gal says:

Oh my your gardens and photos are fabulous ! I had Cosmos like your first photo last year ! My gardens are doing better now that we have had rain after a long drought and the temps have cooled a bit , but I did loose more then I wanted to ! Each year I change up what I plant and keep a gardening journal so each year I can look back on it all ! I am yet to try raised beds . I couldn’t live with out my flower gardens ! Have a wonderful day !

Thanks Elaine! You and me both! Good luck with your raised beds!  That’s great that you keep a journal from year to year too… Happy Weekend!

    xo Deb

  4. carol says:

I understand the "FRUSTRATION" with the squirrels. They ravaged our new peach tree which had the promise of about a dozen peaches AND got most of the fruit from our apple "bush" which had a boat-load. I had to be content to pick the ones off the ground that they knocked down without biting into (they like to sample and take a bite here and a bite there). Even though it is not harvesting time, I snatched the final apple before they did. I did get a couple of batches of applesauce and apple cake made, but it was pretty sad compared to what could have been. love, Love, LOVE your flowers. Do you know if Dahlias are hearty enough for Nebraska? Just wondered!!

    Hi Carol!

Darned squirrels!!! Well, at least you got a few things made from your fruit trees! Dahlias grow up to zone 8!

Thanks so much for the note! Enjoy your weekend!

    xo Deb

  5. Laura says:

    Hi Deb,

Your flowers are a joy ! Thanks for sharing. I am happy to see the "fruits" of your labor. I was always a flower girl too, and slowly working on adding the edibles (vegetables and fruits), but flowers will always be my first gardening love. I was just thinking about saving seeds for next year, especially some of my zinnias that I especially liked this year, and a mexican sunflower that is very cool. Is the procedure similar for saving the seeds for these varieties? and is a glass jar the best way to store seeds?
as always, I look forward to your farm girl blog,
    xo

    Hi Laura,

I did a little googling and found this great info on saving and storing zinnia seeds.

Your flower gardens are beautiful!! I am curious to what type of organic pellet you used to control insects?? Having horrid time with insect problems this year!

    Kim

    Hi Kim,

This is what I used and it’s worked beautifully! I apply it every three weeks and so far so good!

  7. Cindy says:

Your flowers are so beautiful! We have had drought in our area my zinnias and
sunflowers are pretty pathetic. I hated watching my herbs shrubs trees flowers vegetables all dried up. It was joy to look at yours just so pretty. zinnias
are my favorites cut flowers. May try dalhias next year love the colors.

    Hi Cindy!

Oh, I’m sorry to hear of your dry weather and your poor flowers…it happens to the best of us! My dahlias are getting beat from rain today… 🙁  I’m cringing inside!!!

Good luck with your dahlias next year! You know, they enjoy growing in pots too and  would make a wonderful spash of color on sunny patio or a deck! Thanks for your note! xo Deb

Gone To The Beach

Nothing makes me happier than to hang up my GONE TO THE BEACH SIGN and head for the cottage!

Just the sound of the word BEACH conjures up a passel of images doesn’t it? After all, going to the beach means different things to different people depending on the kind of beach farmgirl you are. For some, nothing but an escape to a tropical paradise will do. White sand, warm, sparkling turquoise blue water, snorkeling and cocktails at sunset is the only way to go. Or, maybe you prefer an overcast day or two mixed in with your sunshine having your cake and eat it too. Me? Well, I like them all! I’ve had the good fortune to dip my toes in the sand of a slew of shorelines over the years. Lake Tahoe, Hawaii ( Oahu and Maui ); California Beaches: San Diego, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, San Jose, San Francisco, Mendocino, Point Reyes National Sea Shore, Carmel and Monterey. Oregon Beaches: Fort Bragg, Crescent City, and Lincoln City. Bar Harbor, Maine, Aruba, Truro beach, The Cape Cod National Sea Shore, Falmouth beach, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard and the Outer Banks of North Carolina just to name a few! While each of them is dreamy in their own way (especially Maui) my heart belongs to a small peninsula on the south shore of Boston.

Psst. Hey…We’re on vacation… Wanna come too?

  1. Adrienne says:

Oh what memories you stirred! I too have been on the beaches and in the water along the coasts of Washington, Oregon and California; Louisiana’s Gulf Coast, the Carolinas, the New Jersey shore, Florida Keys, Aruba (scuba diving too), Hawaii (North Shore of Oahu Pipeline–didn’t surf but watched the surfers on Banzai), Kauai, Tahiti, Moorea (scuba diving), and my favorite dive spot, Truk. For a year, I had the pleasure of living in Long Beach, CA on Pacific Coast Highway (or PCH) right across the street from the ocean. From the apartment window on the 10th floor, I could see from Pacific Palisades to Dana Point. Ah!

  2. Sandy says:

We have a lake place in northern Minnesota where we fish, kayak, sailboat, waterski, paddleboat, swim, and hang out with our two married daughters and two grandchildren, four dogs! We also love to go to Maui and Cozumel for the snorkeling and warm(er) waters.

  3. Marie says:

Deb, I was wanting permission to copy some of the photos you post in your blog. I love the ones at the cottage. The east coast shore has a special place in my heart and currently i live in Washington State, so couldn’t be farther away. Love your blogs! Marie

  6. carol says:

I have a couple of favorite beaches— nothing in your league Deb, but I get very nostaligic thinking of them…..

*When I was a girl (some 50 years ago) our family would travel from Chicago to spend time with my dad’s extended family on the Indiana side of Lake Michigan. I recall going to the distant cousins’ beach house- the Studebakers- to change clothes and walk up and over the dunes. I can still evoke the feel of anticipation seeing the sea grass, coming up over the rise and taking in the vast blue before me. We would spend hours in the water and lounging on the beach.
*My next memory is the shores of California. My husband and I had moved our four children to Glendale. It was a tossup between hiking in the mountains or hitting the beaches in the Los Angeles area. We frequented several different ones over the three years that we were California residents. Each one had their own characteristic, and we loved them all.
*Finally, for our 25th anniversary, while visiting our married son who was in Seminary on the West Coast, my husband surprised me with a visit to Catalina Island. The shops, the boat rides, the treks up and down the narrow roads….the whole thing was a "walk on the beach".

Thanks for letting me share, Deb. I am decorating our basement family room (in Omaha) with a beach theme (it truly is a part of my soul) and have been trying to find a large picture of a dune path with the sea grasses and water in the distance. When I find it, I’ll know I have found "home".

  7. Barbara Lavell says:

Hi Deb – My favorite beach is Siesta Key near Sarasota, Fla. It’s named one of the 10 best beaches in the USA & has the softest, coolest (doesn’t get hot), whitest sand I’ve ever seen. Secondly, Lake Superior doesn’t have beaches like you’re referring to but, I love it. It’s more of a nature experience then a beach experience. Barb
P.S. I have always longed for a little camper like the one in the picture. Someday………….

  8. Shery says:

I giggled out loud when I read that one of these days, you’ll be glamping in your own tiny house on wheels. Instead of being holed up, you’ll be shelled up! :o) Excited for you and the fun you’ll have looking for it and then finally finding ‘her’. I think a decorative must-have will be some artsy version of Venus standing on her shell. Hmmm, looking like Debbie standing in the doorway of her glamper – ha.

Favorite beach? Not that I’ve spent a lot of time there … Buuuuut, I loved finding seashells on a beach near Pensacola, Florida. I was 16.

Loved the pics in your blog — the fishy deck of cards are SO cool. Enjoy every morsel of your vaykay. shery

  9. Joan says:

What a fun time I just had reading your goings on – my favorite beach – the next one I get to dip my toes in – live in the middle of dryness and long for the beach. Oh my the glamping – if only I was able – her name – that is a long list still and a pipe dream, mostly I’m thinking of having a little building built in my back yard that will be my get away spot. Then I will go there to read about all the wonderful glamping and day dream away. Thanks for the great time.

  10. name Merrilyn says:

Hi Deb, thanks for sharing your vacation with us. We have beaches in Alaska, but not like you in the lower 48. We do enjoy the Oregon coast especially Lincoln City and Florence. For the east coast it is our daughter and son-in-law’s lovely place at Kennebunkport. Which I am sure I spelled wrong. We have had a pretty cool summer so a nice day at the beach sounds wonderful. Makes me want to book a flight to the nearest beach. By the way, my husband is still fighting the moose for his garden. They do so like his berries and veggies. (even through the fence). LOL.
    Keep on writing.
    Your country sis
    Merrilyn

Summer Nurturings

Dear sisters,
I hope this note finds you someplace cool, listening to the slow song of  summer.
As I was thinking about what pearls from the shorelines to share with you this week the word ‘ nurture ‘ popped up! And more than once I might add. That’s when it hit me! I’ve spent most of this summer wearing my ‘ nurturing hat ‘. I bet some of you have put in a fair amount of time in yours too! Grab a beach chair and settle in. Go on! Dig your toes into the sand and take a nice, long deep breath. Better? Good! We’ve got lot’s to catch up on!

Oh Deb you are always a great read in all the ways a read should be and I love your flowers – I’m going to do better next year. Thanks for the visit – enjoy the shore. And thanks for all the great advice on the painting of my chairs.
    God Bless

Hi Joan! Nice to see you here on the shorelines! Thanks so much for reading and good luck with your chairs! They are going to be great! Post on facebook when you are done and share with me! I want to see them finished! xo Deb

  2. Laura says:

yes, I can relate to the joy of nurturing. Since having kids, it has become a priority. And my gardens mutually nurture me as I nurture them.
I can relate also to the tastes of teenage music not really coinciding with my own tastes. Little by little, some of their music has broken down my resistance (although the swearing is very hard to take…) I can also relate to getting the Eagle Project completed, as my oldest has done so and got all the paper work in by his 18th birthday, has been approved by council and now waiting for the national level approval. I am very proud!!
Thanks for sharing your blessings ! As always, its a joy to read.

Laura, Oh, it’s so true about the tastes of teenage music not coinciding with my own. " broken down resistance " well said!  I don’t care for the swearing in the least! Congrats to you and your son on getting his Eagle under way! It is a huge accomplishment and the years leading up to it are worthy of such recognition! Thanks for reading… Love Deb xo

  3. Good morning Deb, I hope you are relaxing on the beach listening to the waves roll in and out. (I hope it is cool there) lol. My son started writing rap songs when he was young and then he went on to become a youth pastor and now an evangelist. Rap isn’t always bad. HA! (That son is now 37 years old.) Every now and again he still will rap something out while he is speaking to youth groups. lol. I pray the Lord’s blessings on your son as well. He must get his writing from you. I love reading your blogs. Be Blessed. Neta…oh by the way will be sending more finished pics soon of the camper, got the floor in now. just a few more things my husband has to do, then I can get in there and glamp it up!! can’t wait.

Oh Neta… I’ll have to share this story with my son. I know he will be inspired to hear this! Thank you! You’re right! Rap isn’t always bad! Our son’s old scout den leader is the sunday school teacher at our church and she has heard some of his music and wants to share it with the pastor. Who knows where it will all lead… it’s the journey that counts. I’ll be waiting for those pics of your camper! What fun Neta! Thank you for the blessings and right back atcha!  Hugs! Deb

  4. Lori says:

    Deb,

Love the flower photographs, just beautiful.
I myself am a bit behind on my container gardening.I had geraniums left over from the winter and they were blooming like mad and I just didn’t want to move them, but…
I must get crackin on a trip to the nursery to find something suitable for my pots and the summer heat.

    Lori

    Hi Lori,

Well, thank you! It’s hard to get in all the gardening we want every year…I love container gardening you can grow just about anything in a pot! Stay cool!

Farmgirl Friday

Dear Sisters, I know it’s only been two weeks since our last visit, but it feels like months. Is it just me or do we ALL try to pack an entire lifetime into one summer? I guess that’s what we are supposed to do with these long, sunny days and an overabundance of energy! I’ve been minding my own business having fun in the garden, squeezing in some family beach time and somehow along the way I, um, well I got into a little farmgirl trouble.  Come on in for the full confession….

Ahhhhhhh, the aprons are a precious sight to wake up to this morning, thanks for sharing!!
I love to make my own and collect vintage ones to hang in my kitchen.
My latest is a gardening apron, with two huge pockets to put my produce inside while picking, much easier than having to tote a bag thru the garden rows! You just slip all your little gems into the huge pockets and you have your hands free!
    Happy Summer!! Diana

Hi Diana! So glad you enjoyed.. your gardening apron sound darling and handy too! Thanks for the visit today! xo Deb

  5. Shery says:

Hi D-Boz! Love the aprons!!…and the story. Adore the photo of you in the garden … reminded me of photos of Tasha Tudor. OH, and I just bought a Sundown coneflower yesterday. Your yard and garden look divine. Our landscape hereabouts is desert-like. Only my gardens are green. So sad, wildfires everywhere. Enjoy your greenGreen world; I sure have in your photos. Blessings from the west, Shery

Howdy Shery my sister in the wild west! I’ve been watching the news and praying about those fires… So sad indeed…I remember the wild fires well… we had one blaze across a corner of our land in the high desert just before the fire was contained. Nothing at all compared to what folks are enduring this time…I bet your rusty buckets and barrels are brimming with blooms… LOL! I need to pop by the ranch blog for a visit! Thanks for coming by… farmgirl hugs from the east!

    Deb

  6. Hello Deb, love love love the aprons. I just created one myself with a dishtowel sewn to the front of it, so you can wipe your hands. I will be sending you some pics to your email of my surprise that has to do with glamping. Love your flowers. Best of luck and may God Bless your business. LOVE YA Neta

Hi Neta!!! Your apron sounds perfect… Yes, something to wipe your hands on! Ooooh.. can’t wait for the glamping pic’s!!!! Thanks for the good wishes my friend!  xo Deb

  7. Victoria says:

Shery speaking of Tasha Tudor….oh yes, you in amongst the flowers so reminded me of Tasha. My personal favorite apron is a long blue check in the "Tasha style." When I put it on I’m transported back in time. There’s something so homey about aprons!!! Thank you for sharing Lori’s site.

Hi Victoria, well if you must know.. I was barefoot gardening.. just like our dear Tasha used to do…LOL! Glad you liked Lori’s site and thanks for reading! xo Deb

I have always liked the ones that slip over your head and cover your whole shirt and hanged down. I bought a homemade one last year at a Car and Craft show that is held every 1st weekend in June here. I always love your blogs! Stay cool, been hot and humid here!

Mudpuppies & Horseshoe Crabs

Happy Summer Sisters! Can you believe it? It’s finally here! Why does the arrival of summer have such a bitter sweet taste? Maybe it’s because we wait so, so long for summer solstice (the longest day of the year) knowing that each day going forward gets shorter by a minute or two. If you’re like most Farmgirls, you’re running in twenty different directions trying to capture the best days of summer! Same here! Wanna see a Horseshoe Crab and a mudpuppy too? Join me as I ramble…

  5. Laura R. says:

thanks, Deb, for that virtual tour of your heavenly spot on earth. The pix were great, and could almost feel myself in the sand and water…the horseshoe crab was awesome, however it brought up a stab of childhood fears, cuz when i was little and walking on the beaches of fire island, ny I was told to watch out for them, because they could stab up through your foot with their spiky tail, is that true?
Anyway there are no beaches in my life at the moment, so I appreciate the visit. And I too have 2 teenagers, both with permits, and the older with a "serious" job that I have to help him get to, and know all about the need for juggling and flexibility 🙂 it’s been a pleasure!
    ~Laura

Dear Laura, Oh my goodness that’s a shame someone told you such horror as a child! I guess you could get a sufficiant poke of you hit the tail just right coming down with your foot but in my 25 years walking that beach it’s clam shells ( dropped by the seagulls )  we watch out for. They  can give a cut deep enough for stitches…We all have to juggle one way or another don’t we?:)  Thanks for the visit! xo Deb

  6. Pam deMarrais says:

Hey Deb! Loved the little walk on the beach, as well as the science info. We raise Monarch butterflies [well, my hubby does..] on native and tropical milkweed here in TN. It’s fascinating to watch the metamorphosis and then the hatch. It would be a great home school project for you!
As always, thanks for sharing from your heart and from your home.

Hey Pam! I was hoping you would get to walk the beach with Max and me. It must be amazing to raise Monarchs. How does that work? Do you release them after they hatch? We did a butterfly study when the kids were younger and visitied a butterfly farm which was just facinating! Thanks so much for the visit Pam and Happy Summer!  xo Deb

  1. Raynita says:

How wonderful! Thanks for taking me along:) You are so blessed to have such an amazing Farmer’s Market. When my husband and I were in Kauai, we loved going to their markets. We met Tim, the Coconut Man. He would wack open a coconut for you and insert a straw. He was adorable. You could just imagine him climbing the trees. Anyway, his motto was, "It’s Good to Know Your Farmer." I loved it! My in-laws sell their veggies and they use that slogan now. It is so very cool that you get to know your farmers AND your baker of Chocolate Buns!!!! lol……Thanks, Raynita

Howdy Ranyita! Kauai’s farmers market must have been amazing… Love the Coconut Man story! I think we need to  find a recipe for Chocolate Buns! 🙂 Thanks for the visit! xo Deb

  2. Raynita says:

OH!!!! I forgot to say how I LOVE the rock necklaces!!! Balance is my favorite word….so important.

  3. Adrienne says:

Farmers markets are such fun and I’m usually at one a week. We’re blessed in the San Francisco area with five on Sundays (the entire city is 49 square miles so you never have to travel further than 7 miles); two on Tuesdays, five on Wednesdays, two on Thursdays, one on Friday and four on Saturdays. My favorite markets have cooking demos with seasonal fruit and veggies including the recipes on cards so I can try them at home. Some have entertainment with local musicians, some raffle a big basket of local products every week, and everyone has fun. Stay local and support your local farmer.

Hi Adrienne, Oh I can imagine all the farm goodness you can get your hands on in San Francisco. We traveled there many times while living in Nevada, but I never went to a Farmers Market! There were a few venders cooking yesterday as well and a few of them DID include recipe cards! Stay Local! LOVE IT! Thanks so much for the visit! xo Deb

  4. megan says:

    Hi,
I stumbled upon your blog while working on Kendra D’Angora’s website. I happen to be the graphic designer for the Plymouth Farmer’s Market, and a member of the new-this-year PFM Advisory Board. I am SO EXCITED to see this! THANK YOU for coming to the opening day, and I am so glad you had a great time. We are so excited about our new home! (Oh, and I am also Jenny of Jenny’s Bread’s sister!) Thank you for spreading the good word! See you next week!

So nice to meet you Megan! I love the new location for the FM. I just liked Jennys’ facebook page and let her know how much we loved her " chocolate buns "! Thanks so much for visiting! Please feel free to SHARE this link with the Friends of Plymouth!  Yesterday was great and I can’t wait for next week! xo Deb

  5. kara says:

Hi – Megan (my sister, yes there are 3 of us!) just forwarded this link to me (i do the marketing/advertising/social media stuff for the market) – what a great blog entry and terrific pictures! I posted a link on the Plymouth Farmer’s Market Facebook page – hope we can steer more readers to your blog. It’s great! Thanks again – so glad you found things you liked! If you haven’t yet, you should try Jenny’s cheese buns…!
    – Kara

Hi Kara! Nice to meet you! Thank you! I’ll be back for the Cheese buns next week! We ( MJF) appreciate the share! Thanks for stopping by! xo Deb

  6. Colette says:

Great post, we were so sad to miss opening day – we’ll be there every week from now on. It’s an amazing market, thanks for sharing; great pics!!

Hi Collette, Glad you enjoyed! You didn’t really miss it now did you? Thanks for the note! xo Deb

  7. Hey Deb, great trip to the Farmers Mkt. Ours has been a little slow this year. Lost some of our people due to them moving away. I love getting my veggies and bread from FM, as I love the idea of supporting our local farmers. Prices do not seem high to me, because the benefits of eating healthy so outweighs that cost. Had a good time at your FM. (by the way, I have a surprise in the works, if everything turns out I will send you pics to your email next week.) hint…it has to do with glamping…. love ya be Blessed Neta

Hi Neta! Oohhh just what fun and creative thing are you up to now? I agree, the value of what you buy at a Farmers Market is priceless really. Especially when you consider not just the hard work, but the knowledge that goes into being a sustainable grower….I’ll be keeping an eye on my inbox! Hugs! Deb

  8. Brenda says:

What a nice market. Unfortunately our small town farmers market is not much. It usually just has what I already have in my garden available. Sometimes it is useful though if I come up short on something that I am canning. And I would buy one of those Life Rocks also, although I have boxes of similar rocks in our garage. We use them to make stepping stones with.

Hey Brenda, Yes, the farmers market can be a great fill-in for home grown veggies or if you want to try something new before deciding to grow it yourself.  We love rocks are our house too… we used to keep a batch of them in our bathroom sink… when the water poured over them they looked just as if the waves had washed over them! Happy Weekend! xo Deb

  9. Paula says:

I need to get there earlier next week. I wasn’t able to go until 5 and I was so hoping to get some of those strawberries. I did get some awesome honey ginger balsamic vinegar and some really great raspberry jalapeno jam.

Hey Paula! I tried that balsamic vinegar too…I want to explore her items more next time as well…and if it’s the same gal I’m thinking of her Olive Oil Orange Cake was sooooo good! Hey, if you see me there sometime, come say hi! Thanks for the note! xo Deb

  10. Jan says:

Wow! Don’t think that I have ever eaten a scape before! I DO eat A LOT of garlic and one of my clients told me that I smelled ‘terrible’ one day and that was the end of most of our close hugs…Seems she HATES garlic (poor creature!)…

I am addicted to the balsamic vinegar that I buy at a local store. They also have vessels called ‘fusli’ (think I got the spelling right) that contain the most wonderful flavored olive oils. I will see if they have a link that I can send you, since they have a nice blog that gives some wonderful recipes. They also carry spices and I just read their recipe for making your own vanilla out of vanilla beans. Might give that a try for Christmas gifts…
I would love to try those chocolate buns! The life rocks are gorgeous…
Tomorrow is Saturday and time for another farmer’s market somewhere!! Have fun!

Hi there Jan! That’s too funny about your client who hates garlic! LOL! Well, she doesn’t know what she’s missing does she? 🙂 The scpapes are great in pesto. Who knew? Seems they are all the rage right now! Thanks for the visit, as always it’s great to hear from you! xo Deb

  11. CeeJay says:

Our Farmers Market had opening day last Saturday and it was a pretty good day. I am a vendor there, selling my "Farm Fresh Aprons" and other things there as a crafts vendor. My hubby is there selling his woodturnings and handcrafted knives. This is our 6th year as vendors, but our market has been going for decades. My dad took his farm produce, home made cider, etc. years and years ago. My daughter (as a grade schooler and is now married and has her own family) would go with him on market days.
It’s the social event of the week and such a fun place to be to meet and greet . . enjoy the company of folks. Ours has wonderful produce, baked goods, a couple who have tasty breakfast burritos, another vendor with decadent cinnamon rolls, a local coffee roaster with brewed by the cup and packages to buy to take home. There are a variety of craft booths, meat producers, honey . . . community booths promoting a local community endeavor. And we have some of the best music!!!!
Tomorrow we go back again, for day two. I’m praying for good weather with no wind and another good day of sales.

Hi CeeJay!  It’s an honor to have you stop by! You are one famous farmgirl! 🙂 Your Farmers Market sounds wonderful too!  Best to you this season with your farmgoods! I bet you’ll do real well! 🙂 Thanks for the visit! xo Deb ( who loves breakfast burritos)

  12. Pam deMarrais says:

Deb, I love your Farmer’s Market! You are blessed to have such talented artisans who make great food, great music, and wonderful jewelry! I love to get out to our FM early to get to our locally grown seasonal fruits and veggies before the crowds get there; the produce goes for such a good price that it is gone in a flash. I can’t wait for our local Grainger County tomatoes; they are soooo yummy!

Hi Pam! Your’s sounds good too! Nothin’ like a juicy tomatoe sprinked with sea salt on a hot summer say! Or a tomato and mayo sandwich! Thanks for stopping by the Farmers Market today! xo Deb

  13. Carla says:

Love my local farmers market. Same market, same location I started going to with my mom over 45 years ago. Some of the farmers are still the same, too.
Our market opens the first Saturday of May thru the end of the year, yes, December. During the growing season they are open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday each week. Plants, usually start our season; but then the asparagus becomes ready, strawberries and on thru the year. Late summer, early fall market is my favorite. Apple time, although this year our local orchards got hit by a hard freeze in April after a week of 80 degree temps in March that has resulted in 90% of crop loss, apples, cherries both tart and black sweet, peaches, pears, all of it. I wish I had dried more of last years crops.
In the winter the local Organic only market is open every other Sat and so I can still get fresh eggs, and greens even in the winter.
Bless the farmers who but good wholesome food on my table each day.

Amen Carla! Thanks for your note! xo Deb

  14. Linda says:

Loved the pics and virtual tour! I enjoy our farmers mkt each Sat am.
Have my fav vendors, and try a thing or 2 new each week. Got the most yummy biscotti last week.

It’s a fun and relaxing morningi look forward to each week!

    Blessings,
    Linda

Hi Linda, Biscotti! Yum! I’m going to try peanutbutter granola this week!

Thanks for stopping by! xo Deb

  15. Teri says:

    Deb,

What a fun post! Wish I was there to walk with you and catch up. Lucky Pat! Funny about the rocks….balance has become my mantra this summer, trying to find it with three small children, summer break and a husband working out of town part of the week.

    You rock!
Much love, Cousin Teri in Napa

    Awe, thanks Teri! Keep smiling!

much love to you all too!

    xo Deb
