Two Years and Growing

Dear Sisters,

Can you believe it’s been two years since we had our first visit together on the shorelines? Me neither! I feel so blessed to be able to reach out to you from my beach chair in the sand twice a month! I can’t help but feel sentimental about this little farmgirl milestone of ours. When I think back to what my life was like before MaryJanesFarm, before the Beach Farmgirl Blog came to life, before I even knew what being a farmgirl truly meant, life was good. Heck, what am I talking about, life was GREAT! But it’s richer, tastier, and healthier and way more fun than ever before now! Let’s walk and talk all things “farmgirl “shall we?

  5. Joan says:

Thank YOU so very much for being such a fabulous communicator which makes for a great friendship. It’s all been a ‘trip’ – one that I will never get to physically take. Am so looking forward to many more years of hearing from you. God Bless

So glad you enjoy Joan! Thank YOU for reading and sharing in the fun!  xo Deb

  6. Shery says:

Congrats on your 2 year old MJF birthday :o)

LOVE your green chair. I’ve become addicted to painting old wooden things. Too eager almost. Color gives a life burst to many old goodies that look rather forelorn and forgotten. Paint makes them look happy to be alive again…imo. Looking forward to seeing other paintbrush finds.

Thank you my dear! I loved the blue you gave your prim cabinet on your party porch..Paint does adds just the zing an old piece need to bring them into a new chapter of service whether it be for something useful or decorative… Thanks for popping on my birthday post! xo Deb

Feedsack Florals and a Glamper Hamper

Dear Sisters,

Happy March! Only 20 days until spring and I’m counting each one! I’ve got a case of cabin fever like you wouldn’t believe. We New Englanders almost skated by with another mild winter but February brought the Blizzard of 2013 leaving thousands without power for as much as a week or more followed by more snow, rain, sleet, wind and colder temps. The BEACH farmgirl is living with a house full of Crabby Patties, herself included! No wonder I’m craving the sight of spring florals, lace, colorful, crisp, cheery linens, sunshine, and a warm breeze blowing through my hair. That’s not likely to happen anytime soon so while the wind whips outside I’ve been whipping up some farmgirl sundries that SCREAM SPRING for my booth at the Antique Mall…

Come on in and check out my one-of-a-kind Feedsack Floral pillows and the GLAMPER HAMPER I made to help chase away those pesky winter crabbies.

  1. Julia says:

I love old feedsack fabric! I have a stack of it, still waiting for inspiration to hit me! I did make some into drawstring bags for my tea business for a friend who has a little shop, which were full of tea things!

I was given 2 aprons from a friend who using feed sacks. She made them during WWII ‘while I waited for my husband to come home." They are the most adorable aprons. She used every inch of the sacks! They are a prized possession!

Hi Miss Julia! So nice to hear from you! Love the idea for little sacks too… I’ve also seen fabric added to plain tote bags to dress them up.. so many cute things you can do with feedsack fabric…I know you’ll come up with something wonderful for your stash! xo Deb

  2. Joan says:

I too love the feedsack/floursack fabrics. I was totally raised with them, I had shirts, shorts, pj’s, pillow cases, aprons, kitchen hot pads, hand towels oh I can’t remember all the ways – oh another – we used them for quilts too. Aren’t they just special!! and the picture of your purple case with the pillows – oh how I wish I was there – feedsacks, purple – that must be meant for me. Thanks for sharing your wonderful talent and your superb shop. God Bless

    Hi there Joan,

They are just special…  Yes, kitchen towels, hot pads too! I’m still can’t quite put my finger on the word I want to describe them! 🙂 Glad you enjoyed! xo Deb

  4. CJ Armstrong says:

I’ve been privileged to have been given some feedsack fabric and have made my "Retro" style aprons from them. I typically use either another coordinated feedsack print or another print with them. Those aprons are one of my most popular sellers at Farmers Market.
    Your pillows are beautiful!
    CJ

Howdy CJ! Oh, I bet your aprons are darling… How could they not be? Thanks for reading!

    xo Deb

  5. Doris says:

    Hey Deb,
As usual I loved your posting! Feedsacks I really do love. I sold 38 a couple years ago at a yard sale for $3.00 each. I kept a few very pretty one. My Mom made alot of my school dresses out of them and many quilts as well. The dress I have on in my 5th grade school picture is made out of one. Keep doing all the things you love and letting us enjoy them thru you.
    Blessings,
    Doris

    Dear Doris,

How I wish I was at your yard sale! I would have scooped up all of your feedsacks 🙂 They really are a piece of the past to cherish aren’t they?

    xo Deb

  6. Hedy King says:

Oh my goodness, Deb, flower sacks, antique booth and Cape Cod, I’m loving this post. The Cape is one of my favorite places, as is a booth at antique mall with such goodies as you have. Good luck with this enterprise, you are my new hero.

    Hi there Hedy!

Well, pack up and come on out for a visit sister! Thank you for your kind words and encouragement! xo Deb

  7. Lloyd Patten says:

    Dear Deb,
Isn’t it marvelous what you and others have come up with making using these very special fabrics? I taughr art for years at a southern university and we used to call such things
" found objects". I don’t know about a name, but I’m sure you will think of something

Go, go, go Debby. Keep up the good work….your blog is fabulous. Good luck.

    Dear Lloyd,

What is it that so many of us love about working with " found objects"??? I bet teaching art was fun and so inspiring to you and your students. I can’t think of a better way to live than fostering creativity in others. Good for you! Thanks for reading… xo Deb

  8. Pam deMarrais says:

Hey Deb, your stuff just keeps getting even cuter and cuter! You sure have taken advantage of being "cooped up" in this weather. 11. daisy says:

    Wow, what a treasure!

    Thank you Daisy! 🙂

  12. Shery says:

Your booth is really shaping up now and looking like YOU. The glamper hamper hamper is darling…and useful. Obviously, you’re having fun putting your little shop together. Fabric from the 30s is fun. Store-bought pretties in that era were far and few between for most folks. Love your fresh looking pillows. My momma wore home-made flour sack dresses :o)

Hi Shery!,I Thank you! It’s coming along! Does your mom still have her flour sack dresses? The prints ARE fresh and bright aren’t they? Thinking of you on the Ranch and praying for green grass on the prairie soon. We are getting rain, wind and sleet today…. Good day for chili… AGAIN! xo Deb

  13. Merrilyn says:

Hi Deb, just catching up on the farmgirl blogs. now you need a little trailer to go glamping in. So cute! You just keep amazing me with your imagination for creativity. Can’t wait to get home and get at my sewing machine. Keep those ideas coming. I love utilizing all of them.
Lots of hugs sent your way
    Merrilyn

    Hey Merrilyn,

Well, you know a little camper or better yet, a bunk house for the beach is on my list! Thanks for reading as always… Hope you are home safe and sound!

hugs and keep in touch! xo Deb

  14. Dori Troutman says:

Deb, WOW! You’ve got the real deal. I’m going to get my hands on some of that fabric someday! Love your pillows.

I too wish that we could buy flour in cloth bags still. Well, I guess you can in AZ (and probably NV) where they sell the BlueBird flour in those 50 pounds cloth sacks. I think the Native Americans buy it for the Fry Bread (oh yummy – why did I mention Fry Bread?). But the sacks are white with a little bit of red lettering and one small blue bird. If I remember correctly. Not too exciting.

A Little Romance Everyday

Dear sisters,

Happy belated Valentine’s Day! What did you do to celebrate? Dinner out with your sweetie? Dinner IN with your honey? Something simple? Something tradition- al? Do you go in for those mushy store bought greeting cards or do you make a one of a kind valentine for your loved one? I learned a long time ago not to go overboard for Valentine’s Day and here’s why… A little Romance can be found EVERYDAY if you know where to look for it…

  1. MaryJane Butters says:

Of course I’m here! With every new sisterly hug, kind word given or generous deed done, the world becomes a better place. Why, my world is brighter this morning because of a "lighthouse" that shines from MA.

Aww… Thank you MJ! Love you! Deb

  2. Adrienne says:

In honor of Valentine’s Day (and on many other occasions), my dear best friend makes a donation in my name to the Jimmy Fund at Dana-Farber Medical Center in Boston. He says I’m his favorite cancer survivor (retroperitoneal liposarcoma) and the money goes to a good cause. We both feel warm and cozy, and I feel just a tiny bit healthier every day he’s in my life. I’m sending a sister hug your way and wish you many more days of love in your life.

What a beautiful gift Adrienne both the donation and the friendship! Thanks so much for reading…xo Deb

  3. Joan says:

LOVE, KINDNESS, JOY is what you exude – THANK YOU!!! Also I have put Michelle and Merrilyn and their family on my prayer list. God is good and God Bless y’all.

BIG thank you Joan! HUGS!! XO Deb

  4. Raynita says:

Wow, Deb, I breathed in every word from my head to my toes and straight to my heart. I’m thinking we might be married to two men with a lot in common regarding their thoughts on romance. Like you, I am learning to appreciate it more every day. Yesterday, he took our daughter (27, single and not settling for anything less than her dreams) to lunch for Valentine’s day. They decided to eat at her apartment and enjoy each others’company. Well, of course, this melted my heart and was the best Valentine’s present he could have given me….showing our adult daughter that she is valued by her father. Yep, I’m very good with that, my homemade card from my ten year old and a call last night from my 24 year old son to tell me Happy Valentine’s Day and thank me for his OU Chocolate Bars. Now, that’s romance. Thank you for your words and go hug your Yankee for me….lol….because you two made me smile on this cold day in Oklahoma:)…………Raynita

Hi Raynita! Sounds like you’ve got a sweetie too and loving children to boot!  We are both blessed for sure! LOL! You made me smile too 🙂

    xo Deb

  5. Rebecca says:

Thank you for sharing such beautiful comments. And the pictures are incredible! Each time I look at them, I see even more beauty. I firmly believe that everyday romanace is all around us. We just have to keep our eyes (and hearts) open to see and enjoy it.

So true Rebecca…. Thank you for the note and for reading! xo Deb

  6. Pam deMarrais says:

Deb, this was such an enlightening article. Thank you for reminding me of all of the many ways that romance surrounds us every day. My husband is an artist…landscape pastels, and he sees beauty in everyday settings, much like your husband does. So my flowers are on the easel instead of the vase. You are so right…they don’t fade or die, and romance doesn’t either, as long as we endeavor to keep it alive.

    Dear Pam,

Thank you. My hubby as tried his hand at landscape pastels as well. He loves that medium…I bet your flowers are lovely on canvas! Thanks for reading as always…

See you in June right? Xo Deb

  7. Penny says:

What a lovely post. My husband makes it easy for me to find romance everyday. He’s such a blessing to me. And my grandkids bring me love over and over again. I enjoy your posts and the pictures are so inspiring.

    Penny

Thank you for sharing your everyday romances Penny!

    xo Deb

  8. Cindy Easton says:

Deb, your photos and words are beautiful. As the mother of an adult daughter with cancer (multiple myeloma), I can emphasize with Merrilyn and what she’s going through. The support and encouragement of friends and "sisters" such as you goes a long way toward easing the burden. By supporting her, you shine a light for the rest of us as well. You are truly wonderful.

Blessings and continuted healing to your daugther Cindy…Aren’t we lucky we can count on our farmgirl sisters to help us through hard times as well as celebrating the good ones? xo Deb

  9. Merrilyn says:

Deb, we had such a good time meeting you and it was so good to hear Michelle laugh. Laughter is such good medicine. I was amazed by the beautiful pictures you posted. Such talent.
I can’ t thank Mary Jane enough for being such a strong woman to have built what she has. Such a wonderful creation of a network to bring together farm girls from all walks of life to become friends. Valentines day is everyday for me in just being thankful for family and friends.
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.
    Hugs to you Deb
    Merrilyn

As did I" Mary Lynn "! Why didn’t I take a pic of you and Michelle with the water in the background too? Duh! I’m so glad we got a chance to meet in person and have some laughts amongst the tears too…That’s what friends are for…much love,

    Deb

  10. bonnie ellis says:

Beautiful, wonderful people, just waiting to be met. God bless you all. Thank you Mary Jane and Meg and all.

Absolutely Bonnie! We are a very lucky bunch of farmgirls!

     xo

    Deb

On Purpose

Dear sisters,

It’s great to be back here amongst friends. I hope this note finds you in good spirits and ready for the last full month of winter.  I’m counting the days till spring but in the meantime I’ve been up to my eyeballs in “STUFF “ with the influx of items coming in daily from EBay for Burlap and Bling. If that isn’t enough to clutter things up while I sort and price items I decided to tackle a few boxes, closets and dresser drawers while I’m at it! What brought on this early spring cleaning frenzy? Come on in and I’ll tell you what I’ve discovered. PLUS, we’ll take a trip to the Antique Mall for a sneak peak at my booth and more!

  1. Joan says:

Oh thanks, I’ve been needing an Antiquing outing and this has got the juices flowing for my Farmgirls Antiquing/Thrift/Junk shopping outing coming up soon. Your booth is superb. I’ve been ‘needing’ some different looks in my house, so been going through boxes – yupper found a few – ahhh the joy. Again – thanks and will be looking forward to your next visit. God Bless.

Your outing sounds like the perfect thing to do with you farmgirl gal pals…That’s great you found some fun " new " things to decorate with at home! Love that!

     Thanks for reading! xo Deb

  2. Hedy king says:

Your post make me wish for a road trip out east for spring. The new booth is great, good luck with it.

Come on girl! Thanks for the good wishes! xo Deb

  3. Lisa says:

Are you going to tell us how to find your booth? I would love to add it to my list of places to visit for my next trip to the Cape!

Oh sure Lisa! I guess that would be a good idea! I’ll edit my post for all to see! Thanks!

    Deb

  4. Doris Hall says:

Hey Deb, I always enjoy your postings so much. My husband & I opened our "dream antique" store in 2005 but due to some health problems all our treasures sit in our back yard shop. We had so much fun collecting for over 30years before we opened. Good luck with your shop. I look forward to seeing more of your goodies.

    Hi Doris,

Well, thanks! I’m sorry to hear you had to close up shop.. The fun IS in the hunting isn’t it? Thanks for reading as always… xo Deb

  5. Raynita says:

I want to be there right now! I want to breathe in those antique aromas and touch those pretty linens in your booth. Looks amazing! I want that white Diner pitcher also. You are making me want to find a booth somewhere and start filling it up. I miss the hunt and arranging the pretties and sweet junk. So proud of you!……..Raynita. (Smiling in Oklahoma)

Hi Raynita! Glad I could get your juices going… I stopped playing with these sorts of things when the kids came along 17 years ago, but now that they are older my interest has come back… Having fun!  Go find a booth so you can play too!

    🙂 xo Deb

  6. Merrilyn says:

Did you say TWO floors of antiques!? How can you stand it with all that eye candy. So many things bring back warm memories of years gone by. My girls are always telling me I have too much stuff. So, I riffle through and donate and have garage sales. But, then the urge is upon me to be out hunting and sifting through things for that one more amazing item. I have so much fun and satisfaction doing it. Can’t wait to visit your shop and see the town of Plymouth.
    Your shop is looking great.
    Merrilyn

YES!  TWO floors!!! Looking forward to your visit Merrilyn!

    xo Deb

  7. Hello Deb, Love Love Love the shop. You keep me going wanting to do a booth myself. I have been thinking and dreaming and thinking and dreaming…..OK maybe it is time to quit thinking and dreaming and start doing. lol. I went with my friend the other day to visit some shops here in Salisbury and Lexington NC, and saw some really great stuff. I hadn’t really thought about a booth before just been thinking about a shop but now I am re-thinking that a booth might be the way for me to go. It seems more attainable for me.hmmmm!!!! I may have to just plan our camping trip with our new/vintage camper out your way. I do love MA, and we have been to Plymouth a few times, did not realize that was where you are. Send directions to the shop and maybe I will see you in Sept. Keep us posted. Be Blessed. Neta

Hi Neta! I think a booth is a great way to start… it’s low risk, not as expensive and you don’t have to be on sight all day! I hope you take the plunge! It’s fun! September is my favorite month here in MA… If you come this way there is beautiful camp ground called Bourne Scenic Park along the Cape Cod Canal you should check out!  It’s a short drive to down town Plymouth from there!
Hope to see you and best with your new booth!  🙂

    xo Deb

  8. Julia says:

I like to think I am a simplify kind of gal, but the corners and shelves of collectibles would state other wise! I have moved a lot in my life and have to get rid of so much stuff, that it amazes me how much I end up accumulating once settled again. O well…. 🙂

  9. Shery says:

What funnnnn. My farmgirl pals were scheduled to go on an antique hunting safari this past weekend, an overnighter in an adjoining suite! BUT, snow packed icey roads put a halt to the plan. Poo! Your blog offered up a fun ‘fix’ for cabin fever that we were cheated out of. Thanks for the tour! Best wishes for your success. If I had a booth in an antique mall, I fear that I would spend more than I make :o)

Oh, POO is right! Darned weather…I’m already having seperation anxiety with some of the items I’ve gathered for my booth as well has having my eye on other goodies! YIKES! Thanks for the visit and the good wishes… xo Deb

Farmgirl Heaven

Dear sisters,
Do you dream of handmade aprons like your granny used to wear as she went about her daily rounds? How about a soft, warm, delicate crochet coverlet with an embroidered pillow case too pretty to sleep on? Do visions of tables covered in vintage tablecloths of floral prints or lace set with the prettiest of mixed china, glassware and silver with a bit of tarnish sparkling on your table as the morning sun streams in dance in your head? Me too! Someone pinch me! I think I’ve died and gone to FARMGIRL HEAVEN! I’m noticing a trend in the items I’m collecting for my booth space at the Antique Mall. You might agree there’s a little (okay, A LOT) of farmgirl style influence in my pick’n.

I can’t wait to share last week’s pretty farmgirl finds with you!

  1. CJ Armstrong says:

Oh my goodness! I need to stop holding my breath! I’m a sucker for such things and you’ve found some WONDERFUL treasures! WOW!
    BEE-YOU-TEE-FUL! I’m soooo jealous!
I’m always scouring our three local thrift shops for such things and have found some true treasures. I just keep going!
    What fun, Debbie!
    CJ

It is fun isn’t it CJ?  I’ m loving every minute of the hunt! Thanks for the note!

    xo Deb

  2. Sue Feely says:

Your finds are right up my alley! When I come across old aprons, doilies and other what not I use them, I love laying my head down on a vintage pillowcase with embroidery and crocheted edging and no I cannot do that edging though I wish I could. I am sure if you set up a camera in your booth you would see many many smiles!

Hi Sue, A couple of the pillow cases I bought in a lot of vintage linens came with the edging unfinished… But… I found some ( just the crochet edgings ) on EBay! Maybe you can find some too! xo Deb

  3. Rebecca says:

Oooooh! I love what you’re doing. And the pictures bring back so many good memories. I have a crocheted bedspread that belonged to my great aunt and I love looking at the intricate detail in it. I also have several of her old quilts. I can remember learning to embroider on handkerchiefs first, then moved on to pillow cases. I still have a few of the ones my mother made and a set that my mother-in-law gave me when I was first married. They’re a little tattered, though, because we also used ours (like your mother-in-law). Enjoy your new endeavor. It sounds like great fun.

Thank you Rebecca… Sounds as if you have some real treasures! Xo Deb

  4. Diana Henretty says:

Loved waking up to your post this morning!
As a fabric addict and a collector of aprons, both vintage and modern,
your pictures inspired me this morning.
When getting our taxes done last year at the VFW, in a back little room was a large table covered with a gorgeous quilt, with elderly ladies in a circle quilting for hours.
What amazed me so was, in the little town of Pineville Mo, this group of elderly women, some could barely walk with walkers, were joyfully hand quilting, chatting and laughing together.
When I walked in just to peek, they all invited me to come join them for their little quilting sessions and were so kind and sweet!
    So inspirational!
Thanks for your joyful words and pictures this morning.
Hugs from the Ozarks! Diana, Noel, Mo

Hi Diana! I love the picture you painted of the ladies doing hand work together… Inspirational indeed! Thanks for your note! xo Deb

  5. Adrienne says:

How exciting! I remember my days of embroidering pillowcases, sheets, tablecloths and jeans (yes, a 60s radical here). I wish you much success!

Oh yes… I remember the embroidered jeans too! Loved them….!!! As a child of the 70’s I  have a little boho blood in me for sure. Thanks for the note! xo Deb

  6. Jan says:

Wow, Deb! You really got into my memory bank! I have a popcorn crocheted bedspread that my grandmother made for my parents and a lovely swag. I was lucky that my mom stored and cared for her treasures in such a careful way. I have a vision of re-doing my downstairs bedroom in more of a farm chicky style someday…
I am also doing some puttering on eBay and the travel trailer decorating has given me another excuse to look for vintage items. I did find out a fact about vintage ‘bark cloth’. DO NOT EVER put it into the washer on delicate and expect it to hold up. I purchased some lovely curtains and now all I have left is pillow material! My thought was since they are basically cotton, they would be OK…NOT!!!

A former client of mine gave me some crocheted pillow cases about twenty years ago. I love them and they are so pretty and cheerful in the summer months!

    Have fun!

Oh no Jan! That is a bummer about your Bark Cloth… Well, you’ll have some cute pillows won’t you? LOL!!! Good luck with your redecorating… It’s that time of year!

    xo Deb

  7. Julia says:

Sounds like you are having my kind of fun!!! I recieved two sets of hand embroidered pillow cases. I used them all the time, and was sad when they had graced their last pillow. I found a lovely set at a thrift store, that now have an honored place on my bed. The colors are the perfect match for my quilt, as though they were made for each other.

Wish I could come poke around shops with you seeking treasures!

Me too Julia… I bet your neck of the woods has some great finds as well! xo Deb

  8. Joan says:

Oh Deb, you are just the one to make this adventure an ADVENTURE for everyone who is privileged to come to your booth. My heart skipped a few beats just seeing all the lovelies you will be offering. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you came shopping in my home – I totally use and decorate with all of the mentioned items and then some, they are so dear to me because they came from my Greats, Grands, Aunts and some I made when I was very young. I still do much hand work and am incorporating the bits and pieces of crocheting and tatting into some throws and on pillows. Hope you keep your pictures coming. As for getting the musty smell out – well maybe not all will release from the wood but I would probably put washing soda in a large bag and suspend the hangers in the bag so that the soda doesn’t get on the crocheting – maybe the soda would wick the smell. I will keep looking for ideas on that and let you know because I use my hangers and love them.

Oh, do I need to come shopping at your house Joan? A friend of mine wants to start a sewing night after reading this post! I think that would be so fun…Thanks for the tip on getting out the musty smell on the hangers.. I’ll give it a try!

    xo Deb

  9. bonnie elllis says:

Debbie: I just LOVE what you have found. Wish I lived closer. I think your new shop is going to do very well. You go girl.

Thanks so much Bonnie! Getting it stocked little by little!

    Hey Deb,

You’ll have to keep us posted about your opening. I know the store, and will definately come and see it. Will you ever be working there, or do you just set up? I’ve had luck with woolens using the ‘at home dry cleaning kits’, the ones you only toss with a dry-cleaning sheet, no bag involved. They suppossidly clean the item and they include a spot cleaner, but more importantly they impart a clean smell. Then just hang them outside to soak up our coastal New England air! The antimicrobal Febreeze works wonders also. I look forward to seeing your booth. I could probably stock if for you with all my collected stuff…..maybe you’d consider consignment? Best of luck! Sandi

    Hi Sandi,

I won’t be working there as the mall has full time dealers who run things so I have the fun of setting up but I don’t have to be there.  Thanks for the freshning tips and your note!  xo Deb

  11. Sukochi Lee says:

I was in our Thrift Store Weds. and saw two crystal lamps. Might ought to go see what they want for them. Though I am prim, not crystal. Still……

That a girl! Thanks for your note! xo Deb

  12. Carol Norwood says:

Hey Deb … I love all the great stuff you have found but, like you, I think I would have trouble selling it. I’d want to keep it all. I just bought a vintage table cloth for $4 and when I brought it home it fit my dining table perfectly, as if it had been made for it. Every time I walk past the table, I smile! Keep sharing with us. I love looking at the stuff. You must be having so much fun gathering things for your shop! Carol

    Hi Carol,

Don’t you just love when you find the perfect thing for a song?! Love it! Thanks for the note and I’ll keep you posted!

    xo Deb

Much love to you cuz! Here’s a quote from MLK Jr. that I thought was appropriate for your post today.

Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. Martin Luther King, Jr.

    Hi Teri,

Oh, I love the quote… PERFECT! Wish Kelly luck for me! Thanks so much for the note! Love cousin Deb! hugs to all !

  16. Merrilyn says:

Hi Deb, it looks like you have really been busy finding things to open your booth with. I have been collecting crocheted items for a long time. When I look at the handiwork and think of the time It took to make I cannot but be impressed. I have a wooden shelf filled with my mom’s teacups and a fragile linen embroidered apron hanging underneath it in my kitchen. It creates such a sweet feeling.
You Re finding some amazing finds. Hope to be visiting your shop soon.
    Merrilyn

Hi Merrilyn, Looking forward to meeting you and your daughter in Plymouth soon!  Thanks so much for the note! Deb

  17. Shery says:

Sure wish I could walk into your booth when you get it all set up. I’m sure it will ooze farmgirl charm and you’ll meet a lot of fun folks in your new venture. Finding all the goodies for your booth will be a good winter pastime. Have fun with alllll of it — I know you will 🙂
    Your farmgirl pal out west.

Hey Shery! I wish you could come too! One of these days… here or there…You are so right… My hunting and gathering adventures are keeping me busy this winter while the garden sleeps! I wish I could come for a nice sit down on your party porch! I keep seeing things on EBay that you would love!!! xo Deb

  18. Pam deMarrais says:

Deb, you have excellent farm girl taste! I love all of your items…especially the beautiful pillow cases. You may have to offer your own mail order service! I am sure that your new endeavor will bring lots of smiles and good memories to your customers.

Hi Pam! Well, thanks! I’ve noticed that lots of people sell vintage items on Etsy as well.. so maybe things tha don’t move well in the shop can go to an Etsy shop at some point… As always thanks for the kind words and for reading! xo Deb

  19. Hey Deb!

Oh what fun! I have loved Ebay for years and have found many a lovely apron to add to my farmgirl apron and textile collection. I really love that last one you show here! It’s so cute! I love antique malls, too. Wish we had one around here. The one I used to love to go to closed up years ago and there isn’t one close by now. Good luck – Can’t wait to see more of your finds!

Big hugs from your blogging sis,
    Nicole
    (Suburban Farmgirl Blogger)

Hey Nicole! So glad you stopped by… I LOVE the last apron too! I was bidding till the last minute on that one! LOL! Well, you’ll have to make a drive to Plymouth with your sweet family and we’ll shop and have lunch down town! Hows that sound?  xo Deb

  20. Heidi G says:

Talk about inspiring. This post put me in the mood for a little spring cleaning and curtain hanging. Thanks Deb. Viva la vintage farmgirl chic!

Well, thanks Heidi! I want to see more pic of your vintage aprons on your farmgirl blog! I bet they’re darling!!! xo Deb

  21. Grace says:

    Hi Debbie,
I love your idea & treasures you have. All the wonderful heartwarming memories they bring to the farmgirl in us. I still have wonderful embroidered pillow cases & aprons from my Great Grandmother. Good luck in your new shop…can’t wait to see more in the future.
    Hugs,

  22. Kim says:

Oh my heavens! I’ve been contemplating doing the same thing, here in the Pacific northwest! You’ve just completely pumped me up and inspired me. Thank you. I’m so excited!

Yay Kim!!! Just go for it! You’ll have so much fun choosing items for your booth! I’ve been ironing freshly laundered linens all day! So fun to imagine who did all the beautiful handwork on the pillow cases and tea towels… Best of luck and keep us posted on your booth adventures! xo Deb

  23. Kimberley says:

My sister is a professional baker and laughs at me because I wear an apron. I love aprons and would love to have some of the older, vintage ones some day. Right now I have a mix of some purchased from a discount store and some that I sewed myself. I love crystal on the table. It dresses it up nicely. Have you considered adding crocheted doilies to your booth? I have a few that my grandmother made that are the perfect size for setting a crystal vase on my kitchen table. Once my mother purchased me a knitted octagon table cover. It didn’t cover the entire table, so it wasn’t a table cloth and I don’t think it counts as a runner because of its shape. Hmm, I wonder what happened to it. I guess I will have to go hunting for it now. I love reading your musings. Keep up the good work.

Hi Kimberly! You just keep wearing your aprons and baking no matter what people say! 🙂  Yes, we are looking at doilies, and loads of other vintage goodies too. Most of the aprons I have found are all handmade… as I iron each one I love looking at the details like stitching on the apron strings, hankie pockets, and rickrack trims etc… I hope you find your missing doilies! Thanks so much for reading! xo Deb

  24. Brenda says:

love old aprons, have a few that I have collected and most of them I wear, makes me feel close to my grandma’s. they never hardly went with out one unless they were going to town or church. My mom use to trim our pillowcases and hankies with a crocheted edge love them. Think maybe I might try to do some. Love your post.

Hi Brenda! I can see why.  I’m falling in love with all of these lovely vintage goodies as they arrive…I have a friend who went out and got a hoop and a pillowcase embroidery kit for her and her daugther after reading this post… I was so tickled! Heck, I might even give it a go! Thanks for your note…xo Deb

  25. Linda says:

In the 70s, my mom embroidered a light weight denim shirt. Eventually, I wond up getting it in the discards. I loved wearing that shirt! Then, it finally wond up in my thrift shop pile. My daughter rescued the shirt. You can imagine my tears as I opened her gift and found it preserved into a pillow, several years after my mom had passed away.p

Linda, Your shirt sounds exactly like the one my mom made for me.  That’s so great you still have it as a pillow… Sweet daugter you have there! xo Deb

  26. Barbara says:

I love all the vintage treasures you mentioned and have a nice collection of family items I’ve saved. Just looking at the old treasures makes me happy. One of my favorite collections though is of vintage aprons. I have approximately 700 and counting!

Back To The Future

” Creativity is not the finding of a thing, but the making something out of it after it is found. “
~ James Russell Lowell

Happy New Year, sisters!

I hope each and every one of you enjoyed your 2012 holiday season and you’re ready to tackle all 2013 has in store for you! We are all fighting a repirartory flu bug in my house but that hasn’t put the kibosh on my plans of opening up a little booth in our local Antique Mall this month with my mom. Instead of hitting the end of the season sales at the mall we’ve been treasure hunting in our local thrift stores, my basement ( and on EBay ) for vintage treasures to fill our booth BURLAP AND BLING~ PIECES OF THE PAST WITH SASS! Everything old is new again and we’re going back to the future in this post for a sneak preview of a few of some of our vintage treasures and a brief history lesson or two! Are you in?

  1. Brenda says:

Oh my the bug has hit you! I love to collect vintage things. I do not have a collection of anything in particular just what I like. Now my middle daughter started out in a booth like you are doing and now just buys and sells on Ebay. The shop she started at did not have enough turn around for the rent and she does wonderfully on ebay….but her love is the composition dolls and she love to get them cheap and restore them for herself. We bought her a air paintbrush for Christmas this year so she can get past the brush marks. Sometimes she buys and resales the dolls but mostly she resales other items so she can buy the dolls. lol…Hope you enjoy this new endeavor and Happy New Year to you!

Hi Brenda! HELP! lol! There is just so much good old stuff out there to fall in love with! Thanks for the good  wishes and Happy New Year to your and yours! xo Deb

  2. The Great Aunt Nan says:

Congratulations on your new venture! Your energy and creativity has inspired me all the way out here in the wild west on a cold snowy day. I love each and every one of your blogs…so, I hear, does "Uncle Larry".
    Happy New Year!
    The Great Aunt Nan

    LOVE YOU!!!! XO Deb

  3. Once you start pickin’, there’s no turning back. It gets in your blood. What’s nice is that you can switch things back and forth from your shop to your home and back again. Never ending supply of decor. Thanks you boot scootin’ over to join in the Old Time Party!
    Farmhouse hugs,
    Cindy

    Hi Cindy!

I’m definitly bitten by the pickin’ bug! I do think it will be fun to do some new/old decorating here at home now that a few corners are cleared out! Thanks for the note! xo Deb

  4. What lovely collections! Yes, my entire farm and farmhouse is filled with nothing but family hand-me-downs. I couldn’t part with any of them, which is why every storage building is full! lol
    Good luck with your booth!
    Blessings from the Farmhouse,
    Dru

Hi Dru! Well, thanks! I’m enjoying clearing out some things from our home and bringing them to the booth. Making room for new fun treasures! Thanks so much for the good wishes! xo Deb

  5. OH, how exciting and you ended up choosing my favorite name for your booth, too 🙂 🙂 I just fell in love with that pink wire birdcage sitting on top of that china cabinet 🙂 🙂 🙂 Definitely post some pics once your booth/shop opens up. How exciting 😉 🙂 I wish you and your mom all the best in this exciting new adventure 🙂 Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather 😉

Howdy Heather from shores of California! So great to hear from you! Oh there will no doubt be so many pretty things I’ll want to keep for myself along the way! Thanks so much for the good wishes! xo Deb

  6. Sandi says:

Good Luck on your space! I’ll be up to visit and see what goodies you’ve got. I’ve had my own shop, rented a space like the one you are, and consign with locals here on Cape Cod. You never know what the market will do, but I wish you luck and fun!

    Sister #3956
    Sandi

Thank you Sandi! It’s an experiement for sure. One good sign is that the owners of our local Antique Mall say the last few years since the economic down turn have been there best of the eleven they have been there. Plus the place is filled to the brim with booths loaded to the gills. I’ll learn as I go as usual! Keep me posted when you head my way! xo Deb

  7. Mary says:

I love antiques, dishes and furniture and all……..used to have an antique cookstove, wood/gas… so I decorated my kitchen with antique kitchen tools. I love those wooden handled tools. and use them, too!

I love all of the above too Mary! Been scouring Ebay hoping to find some antique rolling pins for the booth!  I agree. Why not use them? Thanks for the note! xo Deb

  8. Oh Deb, I am sooo excited for you. You are truly living my dream. Living on or close to the water, having a gift/antique shop. You are making me seriously think about doing the same. I wish you and your mom all the blessings over your shop. love ya
    Neta

Hi dear Neta! Well, get going girl! LOL!!! I think having a booth is the perfect way to experiement with shopping/staging a little shop… I still can’t be away from my " day job" all day so this will fit the bill while the teens still need me for taxi service and all around lending an ear when needed…Oh, I do hope you find a little space to call your own so you can play house too! I know you’ve got it in ya!

    love and hugs,Deb xo

  9. Terri says:

What fun you will have with your new adventure. And best of all, you get to share it with your mother. Best of luck-and please share photos!

  11. Shery says:

Vintage magazine and newspapers from the early 1900s and earlier are a real treasure. Pouring over the pages is a vacation back in time. I bet your cabinet will be beautiful when you get a round to giving her a make-over. Have fun with your creative to-do list!!

They sure are Shery. One thing I’ve noticed is how long the articles were back then and how formally written they were. My hubby reminded me that at that time, many folks didn’t have radio, there was no T.V. of course and other than books and the daily newspaper, magazines were pretty much it for reading material. Thanks for the visit my dear!

  12. Linda says:

I was in our local consignment store and found the most interesting item, a gentlemen’s travel kit from early 1900’s. It even contained a small picture frame for his loved one!
I can’t wait to see more pictures of your finds for your new space.
    Linda

Oh, how neat Linda…I’ve been shopping EBay like a crazy farmgirl and I’ve  purchased some more wonderful treasures! I promise to share in my next post!

Thanks so much for you note! xo Deb

Cape Cod Christmas

Dear sisters,

Living near the sea is something this desert farmgirl promised herself she’d never, ever take for granted. After eleven years of being docked bayside I am still in awe of the power of the sea to calm any rough waters I may come in to. This month in particular has left all of us feeling adrift in the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy. All I know is that we have to keep on walking in love and faith and do our best to shine our brightest when it’s our turn in the sun. Those in darker, stormier times need our rays of hope to guide them in their journey back to the light. And so, in true farmgirl fashion that is what I intend to do. Before we jump into that sleigh for our ride over the Sagamore Bridge let’s join hands in a prayer for peace and hope.

Then it’s off to Cape Cod for some Christmas spirit BEACH STYLE!

Deb, I loved your tour of Sandwich! I have a collection of tiny plates made with different colors of Sandwich glass, which reminds me of home. They say that "all hearts go home for Christmas", and that is true for me. I still serve hot clam dip every Christmas eve in honor of my seaside roots. Thanks for keeping me connected. May God bless your holidays.

    Hi Pam,

Oh I’m so glad you were able to stop by for the Sandwich tour. I was hoping to hear from you! Christmas by the sea is so pretty and so different from my high desert roots as well. Thanks so much for the note and blessings to you and yours!

Dear Sisters,

Now that we are knee deep in nesting mode it’s time to turn in, dig deep and UN-EARTH your BIG FARMGIRL DREAMS for 2013! Are your gardening tools handy? You’ll need them to do some rooting around over the winter months as you uncover where your CREATIVE GENIUS will take you for the coming year!  I’m talking about Soul-work, home-work. Are you in? It’s your turn to shine!

  1. Carol Norwood says:

Barn Charm is my vote! My dream is to continue to take photographs and be inspired by the nature and the countryside that’s all around me! I started quilting in 2012 and I want to get better and better at it so I can make sweet surprises for those I love! God Bless and Good Luck in 2013! Carol, Farm Sister #3886

Thanks Carol! Good for you… Keep at it! Blessings on your dreams!

    Deb x0

  2. Linda says:

I absolutely love reading your blog and seeing all of your photograph!.
I love beaches, but live in Kansas.
Writing out notes and plans is the only way that I can get anything done.
Now for my vote- I love your ideas, but just for continuity sake, and maybe a visitor draw, I like Beach Farmgirl’s Dream.
But, that’s just me. I always like to tie things together in a package.
Let me know what you think.
    Happy Holidays!!
    Linda

Hi Linda! Well, that’s a neat idea… Thanks for weighing in…:) Blessings on your dreams! xo Deb

  3. drMolly says:

Splendid ideas! I appreciate inspiration from you "younger girls". It helps me focus in on the fact that I can do that which I dream at any age.
And I have to say I love ‘Poulet Chalet~ Come home to roost’ – such a kitchy name. Good Luck!

    Molly

Hi Molly! Thanks so much for chiming in! Blessings on your dreams big and small!

    xo Deb

  4. Shery says:

Best wishes for the success of your new venture adventure 🙂 I like all three booth names and their subtitles … hmmmm, maybe Barn Charm as fave. You’ll have a lot of fun with it … you already are. Looking forward to seeing the unveiling.

My farmgirl dream of the moment is putting the finishing touches on our porch-dining-family room. It has been a year and a half project and I’m sooo looking forward to putting a fork in it and saying it is done! Then, onto the inside of the house to create a cottage bedroom and re-paint the kitchen to give it a much needed make-over. Winter is perfect because it is the season of being idoors for me.

Happy Holly HolYdays to you & yours on the right coast 🙂

Well, thank you my dear! Now, to begin dreaming up things to go in it…and I’ll need to start hunting again! Yahoo! Thank goodness for online shopping too… I hear ya on the putting a fork in long awaited finished projects.. I’m guilty of getting swept away in starting new ones before old ones are done… I just finished painting the livingroom last night at 10:00 pm! DONE!!! I can hardly wait to see your porch…It’s going to be so Sherytique! 🙂 Happy Hollydaze to you and Lynn and blessings on your dreams! xo Deb

  5. Laura R. says:

    Hi Deb,
As always, you are inspiring~ to follow our dreams. It is exciting to see you follow yours!
My vote, even though I like all your ideas especially the barn charm cuz I love barns, is for Burlap and Bling. I think that one encompasses your creativity and perhaps a wider ‘audience’. Whatever you decide, blessings for a successful venture!

    Hi Laura,

Thank you so much… and thanks for voting and your feedback too! Blessings on your big dreams too!

    xo Deb

  6. Merrilyn says:

Hi Deb, I’m torn between Burlap and Bling and Barn Charm. Both are catchy and would make a foot stop and turn for a second look. I must confess the whole time I was reading your dream I was saying "Me too, Me too, I want to help." It sounds like so much fun to find and redo and recreate on such a large scale. I do it in bits and pieces; little by little. My dream is on a much smaller scale to hunt out and redo furniture and sew to my hearts content.
I’m visiting family in Bethel Ak, and a very big storm is howling outside so as usual your blog came at the right time. More true confessions, my husband has turned out to be the best candy maker of the family. Who knew hunter, fishermen could do that. LOL! Open your shop so I can visit when we come back to MA to visit our daughter. Keep on writing and have a very merry Christmas.

Hi Merrilyn! Our booth will probably be small to start… 8 x 10 at the most but a good space to test out the market without having to lay out high dough for a lease, power, insurance, etc. When you open your shop filled with  refreshed furniture and your homemade sewing items you can call it Bits and Pieces ~~~ ( Love it )

As always, thanks so much for your note and for sharing your dreams and inspirations! Thanks for your vote too! Happy Holidays to you and yours!

    Stay warm! Love Deb xo

  7. Judy from Maine says:

    Hi Deb,
Dreams I had to sit back and think about that for a minute and what I’ve realized is I am living my dream. I own my own business…doing what I love, I live in one of the most beautiful states in the country. I’m 40 years married to the most wonderful guy…well I could go on, but you get the idea. This is not to say there are not some more dreams tucked up there, but for now, this is the right time for things to stay status quo…just like you know it is time to move your dream to the forefront. My vote for a name would be Barn Charm…it just rolls right off the tongue, making it an easy name to remember…which, of course, you always want for a business name.
Looking forward to seeing your dream board, I am sure it will be inspiring…I know it has gotten me thinking already.
    Have a peaceful holiday.

Gatherings For A FESTIVE And FRUGAL Thanksgiving

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. ~ Melody Beattie

Dear Sisters,

Happy Thanksgiving from the shorelines! By the time some of you read this you might be diving into your leftovers already but let’s not jump too far ahead, I haven’t even roasted the turkey yet! Yep, you read that right… I’m hosting dinner this year for the first time in years and while I’m always grateful to be a guest my heart sings when we have our family and friends over for the holidays. I’m not one to go over the top with lavish decorations but I do love a warm, cozy, and festive atmosphere during harvest season. But, I don’t want to spend a lot of money creating it. So, what’s a farmgirl to do? Go a gathering that’s what! Come on in and let’s talk turkey and decorating and shopping and sweet potatoes and, and, and…Oh, just come in already!!!

Lovely and homey! Just right! You did a fantastic job of making a special day even more special! I would have loved to have been one of your guests and taken it all in! Have a lovely day!

Thank you Margaret! I’t so fun to create something fun out of a mix of unlikely pairings… Our guests enjoyed it and I had a ton of fun hosting too! xo Deb

  2. Adrienne says:

Lovely decor and I’ll bet the dinner was enjoyed by all. How creative!

Thank you Adrienne Dinner turned out alright too!  Whew! xo Deb

  3. Shery says:

Beautiful, uniquely personal, a festive & friendly tablescape!! Oh so farmgirlish. I LOVE mixed dishes and layers of ‘the unlikely’.

I collect old china … anything that tickles my fancy and that is a good deal. I saw a tablescape years ago that absolutely enchanted me and left a forever impression. NONE of the china matched, but it was all from the same general era … late 1800s into the very early 1900s. EACH place setting was unique unto itself. fresh flowers paraded down the length of table in old teapots and inbetween them there were oil lamps. So, I opted to do the same thing. Love my mixxed up dishes. All those odds & ends "orphans" are a family now.

Hey Shery! Well, thank you kindly! I’ve seen glimpses of your china orphans in your posts… you make them look like one big happy family! The tablescape you described sounds perfect…I can see how it would make a mark on a farmgirls heart! I don’t collect as much as I did before the kids came along, but lately I can hear the call to go " hunting"  again off in the distance. xo Deb

  4. bonnie ellis says:

Way to go farmgirl! Simple is enough. It’s people who count. God Bless.

    Amen sister! xo Deb

  5. Merrilyn says:

Deb, whatever you do you make it look like fun. It takes more imagination and a creative spirit to do what you do then have it all ready made. Heres to the great job you did AGAIN! Happy thanksgiving.

Thanks so much Merrilyn! So nice to hear from you! I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful!xo Deb

  6. Laura R. says:

I love it !! True farmgirl style. And the ‘flowers’ from outside had to be my favorite part! Who knew they could look so festive? I have those out in my garden now adding to the autumn landscape but am impressed how you brought them inside! thanks again,Deb, for your inspiration and creativity!

Howdy Laura, Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed… I’d been missing my daily ritual of bringing in cut flowers! LOL… I thought the browns and tans of the dried flowers were very Thanksgivingy too!  xo Deb

  7. meredith says:

Hi Deb! So funny to read about your burlap purchase- I saw the same burlap at our Virgina TSC and thought the same thing- I MUST buy it because the uses for it are endless! Hope you had a blessed day!

Hi Meredith! Don’t you just love burlap? You MUST buy some, I agree! Thanks so much for your note!

Very inspirational! I truly needed to read you beginning comments. I so often forget to be grateful for what I do have and NOT dwell on what I don’t have…contentment can be so elusive.

More Than A Keeper

Dear sisters,

I hope this pre-Thanksgiving note finds you all well today and that our Beach sisters along the Eastern Seaboard are getting the relief they need from the wrath of hurricane Sandy not to mention the ” no name ” Nor’ easter storm we are smack dab in the middle of. We’ve lost power twice today and many more North Eastern communities have been hit with record snow fall over the last two days. MaryJanesFarm has created a Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief fund and offering a percentage of all sales to the victims of Hurricane Sandy and this Nor’easter! High winds and heavy rains are my sound track today but snow is not predicted for us further up the coastline. I think it’s going to be a doozy of a winter! That being said, seasonal changes abound for better or worse. After all, as a “stay at home mom” I take my role as “the keeper” of our home pretty darned seriously! It’s part of my job description to shore us up during stormy weather and to do my best to keep things running smooth as the bay on a flat calm day. Come on in out of the sleet and snow for a hot drink and a nice long chat about keeping the harbor light burning in a modern world.

  1. Renee Schott says:

    Good morning Deb.
I was a working mom, and I would have given anything to be JUST a stay at home mom. I feel these woman are the luckiest, because they get to choose what they do. Must of us don’t even get that choice. SO when someone says to me they are JUST a stay at home mom I always tell them you are the lucky ones. Keep up the good work. All of you moms.

Bless you Renee… It’s so true…I know all to well the guilt that plagues many working women with children as I was one of those mom’s too for a time… Let’s face it…Being a mom is no slam dunk no matter where we sit! Thank you for reading and for your kind words… xo Deb

  2. Adrienne says:

During the 70s, we had a button that said "Every woman is a working woman." It’s true. When people asked what I did, I said I worked at home. A SAHM is a hyphenated position because there is always more to include like raising an outstanding child, creating healthy meals for your family, educating your child, washing, ironing, cleaning, budgeting…you get the idea. If you were to hire a personal assistant who was as qualified as a SAHM or homemaker, s/he would be worth much more than your typical professional athlete or career politician. And look at the difference a preposition makes: Rock on, farmgirl!

"I work at home" and "I work from home" are both meaningful occupations.

LOVE IT!!! Thanks so much for weighing in! xo Deb

  3. I love this post and the lighthouses! The entire time I was raising my children, I would call myself a homemaker. Now, I help my husband run our company from our home and this makes me a Managing Member / Homemaker It’s funny, when I fill out those forms that ask what I do for a living, I still long to write homemaker. It is a badge of honor . Many homemakers must also work outside the home, and I am in awe of what they are able to accomplish as well. Daily, I thank God for women who delight in being keepers of the home, whether it is full or part time — it is so important and needed! ~Blessings upon the keepers of the home!

Thank you Becky! So true.. seasons come and go… best we take each one as it comes and embrace it. Blessings back atch a!

  4. bonnie ellis says:

Right On girl! I was lucky to be a stay at home mom. In the 60s when I was raising our children the word "just" was used then also. I am sure the label was put there by men who wanted to keep their women out of their business. But my husband didn’t feel that way. Our 50 year marriage attests to that. I’m still a homemaker and I don’t regret it one minute.

You are lucky! Congrats on the big 50!!  Thanks for sharing and for reading! xo Deb

  5. DrMolly says:

I agree with Renee – I would have loved to be "just a SAHM" when I was at that stage of my life. But sometimes life doesn’t give us that opportunity. I reared my children with the very best that I had as all loving mothers wiil do. I honor and always have those moms who "keep the homefires burning" – my mom was one & she is still "momming" at 82! Now, as a retired professional I get to be a "full-time homemaker" & I am loving it!!!

See? We all have to do the best with what we’ve got at the time and that especially includes mothering! Job well done! Thank you for reading as always!

    xo Deb

  6. Jodie says:

I say this proudly…I JUST became a stay at home mom!!! Three weeks ago! And what a job this is!!! My husband is my biggest fan. Every morning he gives me a kiss and calls me "super mom" and tells me that I’m doing a great job. Unfortunately in three months, I will have to return to the working world (part time, however) to help our family pay off all of the school loan debt I acquired in my pursuit to become a physical therapist. The first week that I was home from work, one week pre-baby, was a hard one for me as I’ve spent the last 8 years building my career. But there is no place I’d rather be than home with my little man. Thanks for the your lovely post and for planting the seed in me to NEVER say I’m JUST a SAHM.

Congratulations Jodie! I too mourned my job in the beginning, but life with little one’s soon took over and I never looked back…I’m so happy for you and your family! Thank you for reading…xo Deb

  7. Dolly Sarrio says:

My girls are grown and I was once a low speaking woman who when asked what do I do for a living answered, I am a housewife and stay at home with my girls…Now I would shout it from the roof tops! It is the most important thing a woman can do! I would not do anything different today except to sing with joy for the chance to do that most important thing.
I lived through the sixties and the seventies…the bra burning days…yes we have come a long way but have we really? Yes we just need to realize it..I wish more women would stay at home and take pride in raising their offspring…

Staying home isn’t something all women can do or choose to do. After all, we need great women in the workforce sharing their talents and inspiring others too! I just want moms who choose to stay home to realize it’s something to feel good and confident about! Thanks so much for your note! xo Deb

  8. Janine says:

I LOVE saying, "I’m JUST a mom." I spent so much of my life defined as my job, especially since I started my career at such a young age (10 years old). And even when I retired at age 30 and started a complete different (and relatively successful career), my identity was still tied to my profession. People saw me in terms of what I did for a living. It felt like false admiration.

Being a mother is different. In this case, my family is a part of my personhood. I’m very proud to that. When I say "I’m just a mom," people still try to find out other information–what was I before?

But I hold fast. My identity is not where I come from or what I did for a living, my talents, or my job titles. My identity is wrapped up in the love I create around me in my family.

    That is who I am.

    I am just a mom.

    Dear Janine,

The way YOU say, ‘ I’m JUST a mom " is perfect…! Thank you!!!

    xo Deb

  9. Jan says:

Right on Deb! I have been caring for folks and their homes for at least 25 years. Twenty years ago I would say, ‘I’m JUST a housekeeper’. Now I say, ‘ I am SELF EMPLOYED and run a custom home care/pet sitting business!’. It has occurred to me that I was able to support myself with a job that allowed me to chose who I worked for and where I worked. I haven’t been without work EVER…
My own mother was a SAHM until I went to jr high and my dad was always able to be at home with us. And that, my dear, is why we had a loving and close family..

Hi Jan! Good for you for raising the bar for for yourself! That’s how ya do it ‘farmgirl style’! Thanks for your note, as always…xo Deb

  10. Mary Pitman says:

I was proud of being a "stay at home mom" when my children were small, and in the growing years of their life. I know it kept us from having enough money for some things that would have been nice to have, but I so enjoyed being with my little ones and teaching them things, etc. Never will regret that.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Love reading your blog!

Thank you for reading Mary! Glad you stopped by to share here!

    xo Deb

  11. Laura R. says:

Thank you, Deb, for bringing this important issue to the light. I have never felt ‘career-minded’ like we were brought up to be. I find the most important ‘career’ I have is to be there for my kids. I am by no means a ‘superMom’ but my kids love and respect me and like having me around. I do work part-time as a bookkeeper but always feel the unspoken ‘just a bookkeeper’ when asked ‘what I DO’. The ‘what I do’ thing has always seemed more important than ‘who I am’. And ‘who I am’ is very complex and deep and cannot be defined by my ‘occupation’. I know this but always hate when in a social situation the question comes (and it ALWAYS does !!!) so..’What do you do?’
Thanks for reminding me that what I do and who I am is valuable and it is I that need to feel that and appreciate it, so my answer can feel good, no matter what it is.

    Dear Laura,

So well said… Mothers simply can’t fit all that we are and do on one card! LOL!  Thank you for reading Laura! xo Deb

  12. Dolly Sarrio says:

I wanted to clarify something from my previous statement above. I didn’t realize at the time it sounded derogatory towards working women. I was trying to make a point to those who choose to be stay at home moms. That they should not feel like their job is not an important one. I have been fortunate enough to have had both choices, stay at home mom and then to work at very fulfilling jobs. Thanks

Thank you Dolly! I knew what you meant!!! 🙂

  13. Sarah says:

Woohoo! I 100% agree with you Deb. Being a homemaker i serious business, and it takes time and effort that most people never realize, unless they do it. 🙂

Hi Sarah! So true! Thanks so much for reading and your note!

    xo Deb

  14. Joan Marie says:

Ditto on the lovely notes sent by all our farmgirl sisters. Loved being home with my 3 children, loved working part time as they grew, loved working full time for 20 years since then AND now i’m trying to love being home again (laid off for over a year). Home is never boring or dull – I’ve been busy being handyman/woman, writer, property manager, crafter, seamstress, knitter, farmer and teacher. A few of these titles even paid a little stipend. And how lucky am I to now have time to join a book club, a local organic gardening club and the American Sewing Guild’s local chapter, SewFriends. I’m businer than ever!

Hi Joan Marie!, " Home is never boring or dull"… so true… sounds like you’re one  busy farmgirl!  Thank so much for reading and your note too! xo Deb
