Thanks for your support of moms everywhere! It’s definitely one of the most important jobs out there. Good luck with the wisdom teeth. Black tea bags were my Godsend when I had them removed. Best,
Alex, your Rural Sistah in AK

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hey Alex! Glad you enjoyed… I kept thinking of you being at the starting gate as a new mom and how wonderful it is. Black tea bags? I’ll give that a try.. Oh, I forgot to include that the dentist recommended that our son eat an entire whole pineapple the day before surgery. Apparently there’s something in pineapple that helps with swelling? So, of course.. I bought the pineapple! 🙂 Happy FIRST Mother’s Day to you Alex!
Deb, your beachy sistah in MA.

  5. Hi Deb.
I love how you phrased the whole Mom job! I’ve raised two, then two grandkids. Been a lot freer with the grandkids. They lived with me for 6 years. Despite having my freedom cut off when they arrived, I truly enjoyed having another crack at being a Mom. I relish the moments spent with both my kids and the little ones. This weekend is both my daughter’s birthday and Mom’s Day. We will celebrate and I will be thanking God for such a blessing.
I like the chocolate ice cream soother.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Syliva,
Wow, you’ve been busy with your mom job haven’t you? I think all of us who are granted the honor of motherhood ( by what ever means it happens) are blessed…I really do believe children are the best teachers. Happy birthday and Mother’s Day to you and your daughter… Just enjoy! Thanks for reading… xo Deb

Spring Tickles

017-001Hoe while it is spring, and enjoy the best anticipations.  It is not much matter if things do not turn out well.  ~Charles Dudley Warner

Dear sisters,

Don’t you just love the anticipation of spring? Not the first day of spring so much, but the actual a rriiiiiiiiiiv ing of spring? Say it with me. A rriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ving! It’s a time of many firsts and tried and true rituals too. Those first few sunny days over 40 degrees have a way of tickling spring right out the earth. Buds on every growing thing begin to burst, bulbs in bloom delight us with their longed for vibrant colors and fragrance and us human-folk begin to happy dance our way through spring to-do lists created during the last snow storm. Spring is working its magic on me and I’m feeling tickled about lots of fun spring things! So, come on in! I want you to be tickled too! Continue reading

  1. Juanita says:

Debbie, I so enjoyed the blog, as a matter of fact I enjoy all of them. Love Max, he is a doll, I have a Yorkie and I love him and he likes to be out with me when I plant. I plant in 4×8 boxes . My strawberries have blossoms and They will need covering w/ net before the Robins get to them. Yes spring has really sprung here on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and now if the pollen would just go away I can enjoy it. Any way enjoy and keep up the good work. Farm Sister #1020 Juanita

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Juanita!
Aren’t dogs such great company in the garden? It’s much warmer down your way…I’m ready for fresh strawberries now too! Thank you for the note and happy gardening!
      Love, Deb

  2. Joan says:

AHHHH Spring, we’ve had a few days of it and the a few days of snow and supposed to have more snow this weekend so planting is a couple weeks out for us too. Although I am so happy to see all the pretties that are returning. A Robin has made a next on our front porch so that is fun to watch, no doggies here so am glad to see your precious Max. Always nice to read your blog’s, gives me energy. I too am busy making aprons, I have been asked to sell at a craft fair this Fall so need to get lots done before outside time. Thanks for the great blog.

  3. I have 3 doxies. Happy, joyful creatures. Love the outdoors. Love to sunbathe. it’s a week of rain here with some sun breaks. I put on my favorite garden flip flops and head outside. They come running out with me. Love hearing about your garden and lovely Max Just seeing blue skies and new green sprouts make spring so exciting.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Sylvia! So true… Blue skies and green sprouts make everything feel and look better! And doggies too! Thanks for sharing your spring tickles! xo Deb

  4. Deb Bosworth says:

    Howdy Joan!
As always, it’s great to hear from you! I’m happy to hear you are in stitches too! 🙂 What a blessing to have that little Robins nest to watch right outside your door… so many miracles in springtime to enjoy and appreciate…Happy Sewing Joan and thank you for your sweet note! xo Deb

  5. Wendy Brown says:

I saw your beautiful hens. Does MJF have anything about eggs and raising chickens? We don’t eat our chickens we just love to hear them and watch their antics and the bug and snake eating is always welcome. I have silkies and a few silkie/brama roosters and new leghorn babies. My brother in Kingston Washington raises miniature goats, his new kids were 6″ tall, so cute and he has trouble with coyotes. Any ideas or stories about chickens?

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hello Wendy! MaryJanesFarm has loads of info on choosing chickens, raising chickens, eating chickens and more. MaryJanes OnlineFarmgirl Connection is a great place to meet more farmgirls who are keeping backyard chickens and Nicole Christensen ( our Suburban farmgirl blogger) is a newbie backyard chicken keeper. She just wrote a very useful post about about surviving being a first time chicken mama! I think you’ll enjoy it!

Thank you for reading and the note too!
      Deb

  6. Nicole Christensen says:

Deb, Oh my! Your fur-baby is toooooo cute! I love the last pic with the caption. You’ve just inspired me to pick up some dinner plate dahlias this year. Don’t ya just love new flowers in the garden?!

    Happy Spring Farmsister!
    Nicole
    (Suburban Farmgirl)

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hey Nicole! I sure do! Let me know how your dahlias do…and I’ll give Max a little pat for ya!
Happy Spring to you and your family!
      Hugs! Deb

  7. CJ Armstrong says:

Looks like some fun projects in the works! Thanks for sharing everything!
Max looks like a swell fellow!
    Happy Spring to you!
    CJ

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi CJ! I’m excited to get my apronista on, just like you! Haven’t done that since home-ec in High School!
Maxi-doo is my lovebug for sure!
Thanks for stopping by and saying howdy! xo Deb

  8. daisy says:

So many wonderful things happening there! I can’t wait to see your garden and your completed aprons. Enjoy every doggone minute!

  9. Deb, that Max is a ham isnt he. What fun fabric and beautiful seed packets. I love spring time because I love the longer daylight hours and opening the windows for fresh air flowing thru the house. Also this spring is special as I am officially a grandmother after waiting on these kids for the last 19 years, they adopted a beautiful baby boy who was born this past Wed. He is adorable. I will send you a pic to your email later. it is beautiful here in NC we spent a day with my younger son and his girlfriend hiking and on a picnic with all 5 dogs. Wooo, I am tired. Be Blessed, and happy planting. (by the way I am going to try some of those window box dahlias.) neta

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Howdy Neta!,
Great to hear from you! Congratulations…what could be more perfect than a newborn grandchild in springtime? Blessings to you and your family as you welcome the newest little seedling into the family garden!
      xo Deb

Cottage Check-Up

009-001

Dear Sisters,

What a week! The sun’s been out, the skies are clear and it’s beginning to look a lot like spring in New England! Yahoo! I hope you’re getting some signs of spring in your neck of the woods too! We’ve been anxious to get down to our little slice of heaven for a while to see how the little Sea Horse survived the winter. With the improved weather conditions (temps in the low 50’s) we made a day of it last Sunday. My hubby and I brought my sweet mother-in-law along for the ride ( she just turned 92 ) to check-up on the cottage. Come on in for an off-season sneak-peak! Continue reading

  1. Sandy says:

Looks so fun! Can’t wait to get to our lake place when the snow is gone and the frost comes out of the ground. Be careful with that heater! Don’t want to put that fire truck to work. Also about your windows, on Rehab Addict on HGTV they showed how to replace the rope and get the window working again, maybe you could find a tutorial.

  2. Joan says:

AHHHH what a restful, pleasant day I just had, tripping along with you. All my favorite things at the beach. Look forward to many more. God Bless.

  3. Adrienne says:

What a wonderful place you have! I had a Mr. Buddy Heater in my RV and attached a line with a 5-gallon propane tank to it. It was much thriftier than replacing the small green canisters. Just a suggestion. Also, the damage to your house was minimum and that’s a blessing for spring. The shed looks yar and with minimum work, will be as shipshape as your cottage. Yay Spring!

  4. glenda woodward says:

Thanks for sharing. It looks wonderful. I wish you had our 90 degree temps.

  5. Linda Baker says:

Oh so glad the beach cottage made it though the winter! It is the part of your property and stories that I like best!
Wish we could move our town cottage to a beach, but it is just about sold so we will keep our main country place and move on to visiting new places.
We visited Park City, Utah last week. Beautiful country!!

  6. drMolly says:

My I envy you the seashore. I’m a west coast girl, but live on the east side of WA state – quite near where MaryJane is :~) – but love our Pacific seashore & visit as often as we can.
And yes I knew about the morning doves – we have them here, too & we love to listen to their gentle calls.
I am glad you didn’t suffer much damage to your quaint & beautiful cabin. Enjoy!

  7. Diana Henretty says:

Loved your post, the scenes brought back precious memories for me of growing up in San Diego, Calif, in the 50’s, taking the city bus to the beach to just sit on the shore all day long. I can still smell the bonfires burning there in the sand at night.
Our home in the Ozarks is now finally feeling spring, it was a long, long winter, with cold days and nights, but its almost time to plant now, we can hardly wait!
    Joyfully, Diana, Noel, Mo.

  8. Dolly says:

Thanks for the tour. Your place is beautiful.

  9. Bonnie Ellis says:

Deb…just thought I’d let you know you don’t have the oldest unfinished projects. We’ve been married 52 years and some of ours are from before we got married.maybe some day they really will get done. Your place by the sea looks pretty good considering the horrible winter we’ve had. Minnesota has hard winters too. But at least you have sand. Roads cost a lot more to repair. But, spring is finally coming and we farm girls will git’er done!

  10. Betty Benesi says:

Your little heater is cute, but I don’t know if I would use propane indoors. Our little cottage was built as a vacation cottage in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Los Gatos, Ca. It too is older, probably from the 1920’s. It does freeze here in the winter and we have no central heat. We had propane tank when we moved in 2 years ago, but the heating system it was hooked up to was so scary, that we had everything removed. Now, we have a new very small (looks like a heater vent) wall heater upstairs with ceramic wall heater panels downstairs. Space heaters are used in the bath. We use our wood stove for heat when it is very cold and it can be quite toasty in the winter.
Your cottage sounds so cute and I envy you being near the ocean. How wonderful and lots of good memories for your family.

  11. Sandi says:

Hello Deb, Good to see you’re at the beginning of your cottage season! Here on the Cape we have the same signs of ‘finally’ Spring. Our little cottage on wheels raring and ready to take off at the end of next week for a little ‘southern spring’. Isn’t it nice to begin again!

2013-05-08 001 2013-05-08 003

Dear Sisters,

Happy Spring! Would you believe we had a nor’easter yesterday? It’s still very winter like in many parts of the US and I know some of you got snow right along with us. Will it ever end? Of course it will! In fact it’s supposed to warm up along the shorelines for the weekend bringing rain that’s sure to send Old Man Winter packing for good! What’s a girl to do when she’d rather be outside digging in the dirt? I’ve been taking advantage of the cold weather to get some much-needed spring cleaning done. And I’m not talking dusting, mopping and fresh towels for all the bathrooms. I wish! Nope. I’ve been knee-deep in boxes in the recesses of our basement. Do you think I found any treasure? I found a few things I can’t live without, but I’m giving the rest the ole heave-ho! Well, most of it anyway…

  1. Aaah, fellow clutterer. I now look at things I’ve acquired and remember the spirit which egged me on to gather them. I need to calm that spirit and tell it, “nevermore, nevermore.” I am now trying to organize a sewing studio. I do use the phrase “do you love it?” or now, “will it make a great apron or dish drainer quilt?” The spirit always says,”yes!” Are we hopeless?

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Are we hopeless Sylvia? More times than not I’m afraid I have given in to spirit! Oh, well…I guess we’ll just keep trying!

  2. Deb, I love all your posts. They are always uplifting, comforting and refreshing. This one does all that and also brings humility, and peace to the reader. Bravo!

  3. I’m tackling my barn this summer and I plan on being ruthless once I get the time to dive in. We could use more space so those cross-country skis I haven’t been on in 20 years need to go! Along with that broken bike I’ve never fixed and that wall of bookkeeping records that the IRS wants me to keep for seven years. Gone! I’ll recycle what I can and donate what’s useable. It’s gonna feel soooooooooo good.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Oh, it WILL feel good MJ! My in-laws have a barn with over 4 generations of goodies in it! That will be a tall order when the time comes to clear it out but I know there WILL be some good treasures as well. Good luck with YOURS! I have to admit, I wouldn’t mind diggin’ around in your barn…LOL!!!

  4. Adrienne says:

My de-cluttering began in 2003 when I bought a 20′ motorhome to live in. Everything I owned needed to be stored inside and in one outside compartment. Once I lived in that RV for five years, I then sold it and purchased a 27′ motorhome. That didn’t mean I had 7 more feet of storage space. It just meant the storage was better able to accommodate a separate bedroom instead of a drop-down dinette bed and an all-in-one bathroom with a shower stall containing the toilet and medicine chest. Imagine taking a squeegee to your entire bathroom every day! Now that I’m off the road and in a tiny apartment (converted hotel room), every piece of furniture serves a purpose and I have no need for dishes, flatware or other items for more than I can seat at a table. The clutter has no chance to accumulate because I would have to step over it or remove it. It may not work for everyone but once you have stripped down to the bare minimum for living, you can slowly add items that make you happy, cherish them and give away the rest to others who can appreciate them.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

My goodness Adrienne, You could write a book about your paring down experiences. I think it would be quite useful and inspiring! You must love the Tiny House movement! I sure do! Thank you for sharing your story. It’s very moving. xo Deb

  5. Bonnie ellis says:

I don’t call it clutter,I call it lovables. It’s like trying to hold 15 chickens at a time. We love them all but can’t hold them on our lap at the same time. Deb, you’ve got it right. Time to focus on the things we love the very most and pass on to others the rest. Whee…….the process is fun and heart-wrenching. How about a photo record instead of keeping the real stuff. Less space and we still have remembrance. Love your blog farmgirl. Bonnie

  6. Deb Bosworth says:

Loveables… I LOVE that Bonnie. I like your analogy too! Thanks so much for reading and for your note! xo Deb

  7. glenda woodward says:

I have boxes in my mother’s basement that I have not unpacked since I moved. 20 years ago. I’m shaking my head knowing that it is sentement and only sentement that keep me from it. I’m pretty sure of what is in there. There are all the pictures I took on a trip to Europe with my 85 year old grandmother. 20 some years ago. There is a box of Noritake china my father bought for my grandmother when he was making one of his 3 trips around the world, during WWII. Then there is the box that holds the last of my father’s belongings. A soft camel jacket with suede patches on the elbows….It’s knowing that when I have paired everything down to the bare end, that I will have to say good bye and let go. It makes me sick just thinking about it. I am curious to see these things again after all this time. 20 some years, for some a lifetime ago, to me still sitting there waiting.

  8. Deb Bosworth says:

Glenda, Going through old boxes can definitely bring up emotions…It’s hard to let go of ” things” that remind us of our loved ones… I know… 🙂 Good luck with it. It’s not always an easy process. Hugs! Deb

  9. Sandi says:

Creative spirits are great collectors who love to share with others! I totally understand your decision, as I found being tethered to my store, full time, by myself, began to wear on my soul. It was difficult not being out in the thick of fleas and sales, where my adrenaline would flow. I now find that when I need to ‘share’ a little with others I hold upscale yard sales, and all in all, haven’t really missed much that went home with someone else. Good luck on all you endeavors! Sandi

  10. Deb Bosworth says:

So well put Sandi! I like your idea of holding an ” upscale yard-sale” too for those items that are too special to donate! Thank you for the well wishes and for reading! xo Deb

  11. Marji McDonald says:

Spring cleaning fever has struck me too. I have been tackling the “black hole” I call my guest room closet. I have discovered that I am really good at packing a lot of stuff into a small space. How do you get rid of your treasures you had so much fun collecting? I am having a hard time with that one. I appreciate your insight on having your business and moving on too. You have inspired me to try a few new ideas and feel OK if they don’t work out. Thank you for all your wit and wisdom. Spring is finally here!! Looking forward to your adventures in the garden and on the shore. Hugs to you Deb!

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Marji!
It IS amazing how much ” stuff ” one can squeeze into one closet. When we moved East 12 years ago, we didn’t have time to go through some things and are just now getting to them. Would you believe my hubby still has some of his work from high-school in boxes? He’s picking away at it right along with me! It’s feeling good so far!!! Hang in there with your sorting.. soon we’ll be outside and those dusty, musty boxes of memories will be a thing of the past! Hugs! xo Deb

  12. Hello Deb, aww I am a little sad about Burlap and Bling but I totally understand. I make and sell my things as you know at the farmers mkt/flea mkt and I get so tired of lugging back and forth as well. I have been seriously thinking about doing an online shop as I am always shopping at other online shop,,,duh! but I also can relate to the decluttering. Like the lady above we sold our land and home in La, and we had a 3 story shed filled with stuff, and we moved into our RV to live full time, for about 2 years we had a 30 x 30ft storage with 10ft ceiling filled from back to front top to bottom all the way to the door to where you could barely close. Then once we moved from La. to OR with hubbys job and then from OR to NC we decided to quit paying storage bldg fees and let go. Boy did it feel good to finally be free of clutter and posessions. There is such a freedom in de-cluttering and it is so true that once you declutter your house your life becomes decluttered as well, because you no longer have things to worry over. ahhhhh FREEDOM!..Love ya and keep decluttering. We have a little small farm house now about 1100 sq ft and I just told sweetie the other day that I am ready to go back to my 300 sq ft RV. lol…no seriously I am..Be Blessed. Neta 🙂

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Howdy Miss Neta!

You are too funny! But, I can totally relate.. I love when we are at our cottage… It’s only 400 square feet and during the summertime you only need a few things to get you by! I liken that to living in an RV…Small spaces really do rock!
So great to hear from you! Hugs and blessings to you too!xo Deb

  13. Penny says:

I feel the pain. A very good friend downsized a few years ago and during her downsize I realized my kids are going to back up a dumpster if anything happens to me, I’ve been decluttering every since. My hardest is my “I oh so want to make this” pile. Makes me feel good I am NOT alone!

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Penny, My ” I wanna make this ” pile is the biggest one I have! That one is particularly hard to sift through and toss out… but I do a little at a time… it doesn’t ” hurt ” so bad that way! 🙂 XO Deb

  14. Jodie says:

Oh Deb, you didn’t fail at all. You just followed your heart, embraced the adventure, and then moved on to follow your heart again. That’s living life to its fullest, something some people dream of doing but don’t because of fear. So good for you and thanks for taking us along for the ride! I’m SUCH a keeper/clutterer. I’m currently going through boxes that are 15 years old that having been hanging out in the garage. Fun to reminisce but fun to let go. My secret weapon is husband. He’s my voice of reason when I’m struggling to let go. He happens to do an amazing job of telling me that it’s time to go or it’s good to keep. He even has a reason as to why it should stay or go. Fairly impressive. Who knew?! Looking forward to your next adventure. Take care!

  15. Wanda says:

I have the very same picture of the daisy and mums, my frame is a dark brown, and when I saw yours in the antiqued white it gave me the idea to paint mine. Since I will shortly be painting my bedroom walls a pale green, it should look very good….Thanks for showing the print and frame….

    • Debbie says:

Hi Wanda! Yes, these pictures had the dark brown stain too but thought a light coat of off-white would brighten them up and bring the up to date… Have fun with your up-do too! I agree… they will look wonderful on pale green walls…:) xo Deb

  16. Dear Debbie, I love your article as it has inspired me to move forward an keep cleaning those drawers, cupboards an boxes of stuff with an intermission of repapering some of the drawers (i think the contact paper was from 1950 something) .I to recently (almost 2 yr ago ) closed my antique business of 35 yrs. it was bittersweet but I couldn’t do the standing anymore with the R.A. an so it was time to say la vie..And I had a craft room(S) waiting for me that hadn’t seen me in a while except an occasional visit..But alas the basement needs an overhaul since it still has stuff from the shop in it, so I don’t seem to be able to figure out which end to start at first, so I did alot of nothing..I decided a month ago to not worry about basement for now till weather is better an start small drawers/cupboards an such hadn’t done very many an I filled up 2 trash cans (trash only) I a junker remember an anything usable can be resold so a car load of boxs later to the local thrift store an i’m feeling pretty proud of myself ! But there’s more to go so I say start small one area one box at a time an be ruthless with your decisions on what to go..The local shops appreciate the items that are in good usable shape an the people who shop there….THANKS Debbie for the boost to move forward again an DECLUTTER our space an our minds along with it…Good luck to all

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi there Cheryl! Congratulations on your small but victorious spring cleaning efforts… I’m finding every little box, drawer, and trip the thrift store to make donations makes me feel lighter and lighter… I can only imagine what the shift has been like for you after 35 years of filling an antique shop with wonderful finds. Onward and upwards as they say! Keep up the good work! xo Deb

  17. Nell says:

Hi Deb, I really enjoy your posts. I, too, try many different things when I get interested in a subject. Sometimes I just take classes and sometimes I start little businesses. I’ve done pet sitting, craft shows, reflexology, henna tattoos and more…things that I just get interested in and have to try. The one thing I’ve found is that I have learned so much from each endeavor and am surprised how much comes in handy in my life that I never would have known had I not tried it. No such thing as failing; it’s a life experience! Thanks for sharing your adventures!

Backyard Bee-Friendly Blooms

2323-001 resize edit

Dear Sisters,

The spring thaw is upon us here in the northeast and what remains of the snow is FINALLY beginning to melt little by little. I saw ” green things “ poking out of the wet earth as I walked around the garden this week and that means it won’t be long before I’ll be hearing the soothing hum of Bees buzzing in my ears once again! With over 4000 species of Native Bees in North America looking for flowers and plants to pollinate now’s the time to be thinking about adding some Bee-friendly blooms to your yard! Come on in for a list of plants that will create a buzz throughout the flowering seasons and BEE inspired to help the Bees! Continue reading

  1. Connie Meyer says:

Very nice post. Bees are such an important part of our natural landscape.

  2. Adrienne says:

Congratulations on beginning your fourth year as the Beach Farmgirl blogger! I look forward to reading many more posts from you, especially about your beautiful bee-friendly garden.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Adrienne! Thank you so much. It’s going to be a bountiful year at Dandelion House and the Cottage Gardens! I’m ready to grow baby grow! Thank you for reading! xo Deb

  3. Lyd says:

Congratulations on beginning your fourth year, Deb! I’m also a former Nevada gal and have relocated to the other coast, in southern Oregon. Happy almost Spring! Love your posts!

  4. Linda Baker says:

How did your beach cottage fare through the winter storms? I started following you from reading about it.
I love the beach, but live in Kansas. We only get to Myrtle Beach once a year or so.
Your gardens are so beautiful each year. I know about saving the bees, but I am afraid of the stings. However, we have cover for the birds.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Linda!
Thank you for asking about our cottage. We haven’t been there since October due to the weather, but we are planning on getting down there tomorrow to check things out. I think you’ve just inspired my next Beach blog post! Thank you for reading! xo Deb

So Long February. Hello, March Madness!

017-001

“The most serious charge which can be brought against New England is not Puritanism but February.”
–  Joseph Wood Krutch

Dear Sisters,

Of all the months of the year February has got to be the most challenging. I know for certain this is true for good old New England! Winter doesn’t really get going until February in these parts! If it weren’t for the freezing temperatures I’d probably go a little easier on February but it’s snowing again today and my romance with Old Man Winter is beginning to cool. As a matter of fact, I’m tossing him out on his ear muffs right here and now with you as my witness! It’s not that we haven’t had some special times together because we have.
It’s just that I’m feeling a little antsy these days. The garden is calling me and I’m ready to grow baby grow! How can I do that if he’s still hanging around cluttering up the place with his wet blankets of snow and ice? Continue reading

  1. Adrienne says:

Those of us on the Left Coast would love to share your snow with the Tahoe ski areas. The snow melt in the spring would fill our reservoirs and we would be out of the multi-year drought. I totally agree with turning off the technology once in a while and just talking with someone over tea. All my older relatives are gone so I’ve adopted a couple of grandmothers (or bubbies) at my synagogue. We have a great time sharing stories. You are blessed to have someone to be with whom you love so much. On to Spring!

  2. Country Gal says:

What a wonderful post and amazing photos ! Our oldest is 25 middle 20 and youngest is 18 . Congrats to your handsome son and Happy B-day to your pretty daughter ! Our winter here has been the coldest in over 20 years . I am soo ready for spring ! Thanks for sharing . Have a good weekend !

  3. Kim R. says:

Oh how precious is your mother in law! She makes me miss my granny so bad!! I would love to sit and visit with her just one more time!

  4. jinx says:

Always enjoy your posts and thank you for sharing your world. Gosh, who wouldn’t fall for your Max’s look and do whatever he wants? What a look he has ! I couldn’t resist it !

  5. Jennifer says:

Love this post. So many great photos. My oldest son just crossed over from a Webelos II to a Boy Scout this month. He has a goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. Congrats to your son on that accomplishment.

  6. Vicki McCutcheon says:

I live in Myrtle Beach, SC so I thought this would be a great place to blog. I love Mary Janes Farm magazine. There are so many articles that apply to everyday use. I am planning on having a raised garden this year if I can keep the animals out. We are only about 3 miles to the beach but we still have all kinds of critters in the woods including black bears. I also am into crafting. Mostly making snow flakes and trees out of recycled magazines. But my craft passion is creating goose egg ornaments with miniatures inside them and Swarovski crystals on the outside. They are hard to explain but I don’t know how to upload pictures. Well have to go now be back soon.

  7. Laura R. says:

Once again, I can relate, because my oldest boy earned his Eagle Scout rank and my youngest boy had braces. All precious and proud moments 🙂 Thanks for sharing, beautiful pix !

  8. Joan Marie Brown says:

Ah, winter. The pony making snow angels has the right idea. Since it was 70 degrees in PA today, March 12, and snow coming tomorrow AND New England getting feet of snow (Think Killington) this poem may help us get through the remaining days of this endless winter: Velvet Shoes by Elinor Wylie
Let us walk in the white snow
    In a soundless space;
    With footsteps quiet and slow,
    At a tranuil pace,
    Under veils of white lace.

I shall go shod in silk,
    And you in wool,
White as a white cow’s milk
More beautiful than the breast of a gull.

We shall walk through the still town
    In a windless peace;
We shall step upon white down,
    Upon silver fleece,
    Upon softer than these.

We shall walk in velvet shoes; Wherever we go
Silence will fall like dews On white silence below.
We shall walk in the snow.

Beachgirl Romance

11 05 29 018-001

Dear Sisters, Boy has it been cold, wet and white here on the shorelines. The Farmers Almanac predicted a stormy, bitter cold winter for the northeast this year and they were spot on! I think it’s snowed 4 times in the last two weeks alone with temps in the single digits! I know many of you have had the same treatment and worse in some places. Despite the harsh weather I actually like certain parts of winter. I enjoy having my ” chickens ” close to the nest where I can love em up good with healthy, heart warming meals, snugly blankets at the ready for family movie nights and yummy homemade sweets. In some ways, I wish I could freeze winter right now just to make these moments last a little longer. Instead, I’m beginning to feel that old familiar tug at my heartstrings pulling me back to the beach I love so dear. Where cherished memories rest and new adventures await on the not so distant horizon. I think I feel a summer romance coming on. A Beachgirl Romance! It’s a lot like Farmgirl Romance only beachy-er. Follow me! I’ll show ya what I mean! Flip flops are optional! Continue reading

  1. Kim says:

I loooong for FLIP FLOPS!! I live in South Georgia! We have had snow once and flurries one day! That’s enough of the white stuff for me! I’m planning a trip to the east coast! Just my dear daughter and I! That’s all she wanted for her 13th birthday!! A trip to the beach-“just me and you, mama!” We are so anticipating a warm, sunny weekend! I loved reading your post! I could almost smell the salt sea air!! Thank you!

  2. Joan says:

Oh so nice to view as I sit here in 28 degrees and heavy fog – it really is beautiful just in a different way than the beautiful beach. Thanks for sharing – Happy Valentine’s Day!

  3. CJ Armstrong says:

If I EVER get there, could I come and visit your cottage? Would love to walk the beach and feel the surf lapping around me ankles.
Stay warm and safe in your wintry weather!
    CJ

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Absolutely CJ…I would love showing your around and getting to know you better… 🙂 Thanks so much for the note today! Deb

  4. Adrienne says:

We’ve had some rain here but not enough to compensate for the drought conditions. However, I was able to get close to the beach to smell the air (too cold to wade). Spring is coming soon and your cottage will be waiting for you.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Adrienne! Glad to hear you’ve had some precipitation. I remember the high desert droughts all to well in Nevada. Soon, you’ll be able to wade in the ocean too! 🙂 Thanks for your note! xo Deb

  5. Cindy says:

Loved your post I just read this morning …. As I had another cup of coffee and watched the snow “fly” adding another three inches to our already 22 on the ground :). I do love snow especially when the power stays on and I can stay right here in my little cabin…..I do love the beach, too, and your post just took me there for a few minutes….thank u – have a great day 🙂

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Cindy! I agree.. right now our yard is covered in the most beautiful deep, sparkling white snow and it is beautiful. Hard to believe in a short couple of months we’ll be planting and playing at the beach…Glad you enjoyed our early virtual trip to the shore! Thanks for your note! Deb

  6. I am dreaming of some beach days also. Looking out the window at the piles of snow and the snow coming down with a forecast of 3-4 more inches tomorrow it seems so far away. I will dream with you, hope spring comes quickly.

 Dear Sisters,

Today my heart is bursting with gratitude and happiness for the amazing farmgirl community we are all a part of. I’ve only been a member of the MaryJanesFarm family a few short years but I’ve grown in farmgirl years beyond measure. I simply wouldn’t be the ” me ” I am today if it wasn’t for Mary Jane, Meg, Carol, Gabe, the round table of farmgirl bloggers and all of the friendly, FUN, supportive, uplifting, and inspiring, farmgirls I’ve met along the way.

Do you feel me sisters?

All Grown Up

Dear Sisters,

I hope this weeks post from the shorelines finds you all in good health and high spirits! Can you believe we are already midway through January? The month of January is a month to celebrate in our household because it’s the month our first child was born! And this year is EXTRA- ordinary because our son turned 18 yesterday! Join me as I honor and celebrate this special day in a Happy Birthday letter to our son Zachary, inspired by Alex’s (the Rural Farmgirl) welcome Baby Wilder post, which I blubbered all the way through…

  1. My one and only turned 18 a few short weeks ago. A newly blossomed maturity came almost simultaneously with her birthday.
She also accomplished a lot this past year, fulfilling her goals, and getting ready to start college in July. (yes, July)
I take comfort in knowing that even though she is not a child, I can still be her guide.
Blessings to your son – may he grow to be a strong, prosperous wise man.

Congratulations Rosanne!  It’s a wonderful feeling to know we got them this far isn’t it? And, that we will still be their guiding light as they continue to grow… Many blessings to you and your daughter as she begins a new life in college!

    xo Deb

  2. Nicki says:

Hi Deb! Congrats on your son’s (and your & your husband’s) milestone! My firstborn was also born in January along with my youngest. In fact, one is twice the other’s age (13 and 26)!

  3. Joan says:

Congratulations to Zach and you and Boz, a huge milestone for sure. It’s been 25 years for me but I remember it like yesterday, enjoy it and love each second. Thanks for sharing. God Bless

  4. Pam deMarrais says:

Hey Deb, what a great post about parenthood and its marvels. I love to celebrate each new milestone for my [now grown] children. They will always be my children…so don’t feel like this is anything but the end of one chapter of your lives.
You have so much to be proud of, and you can must feel an extra sense of accomplishment from home schooling Zach. Way to go, farmgirl sister!

  5. Merrilyn says:

It’s wonderful and awful at the same time when they grow up. We’re proud and scared at the same time. How can that be. And I’ll tell you what Deb, they never stop being our little ones. Look at the age of mine and I still want to take of them. You know what I mean. You must be so proud. His journey is just beginning. Lots of hugs to you on that one girl.
    Merrilyn

Brand Spank’n New!

Dear Sisters,

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you all had a warm and happy Christmas with your loved ones. We had a festive holiday season with our nearest and dearest here on the shorelines. Today, I’m writing to you from my cozy basement office with the fireplace going and a delicious cup of hot English Breakfast tea. YUM! We are in the middle of a STORM WATCH on the eastern seaboard. Keep your fingers crossed we don’t lose power while I finish this post! Tell me, how are you feeling about the new year? Optimistic? Hopeful? Worried? Fearful? Anxious? Excited? Over joyed? I think we’ve all had years that we were happy to leave in the dust. Illness, death of a loved one, ( human or 4 legged ) losing ones job, relationship challenges, moving…These kinds of life changing events can drag even the cheeriest of farmgirls under leaving her gasping for air, and rightly so.

If any of you had one of ” those “ years I pray 2014 goes easier on you. In fact, I’ve got 10 ways for ringing in a Brand Spank’n NEW YEAR with a focus on the positive no matter what the weather! Come what may! Let’s welcome in 2014 together!

  1. Joan says:

Wheweeee you are on busy GIRL!!! so good to hear that you aren’t letting anything get away from you. My family say that I make them tired just looking at my bucket list – and I keep adding, oh well keeps me out of trouble. Love the saying that Sylvia shared – hope to remember that – oh I will print it out and hang it in my craft room so I can read it every day. Thanks Deb Happy New Year!!! God bless

Happy New Year Joan! Glad to hear you keep your family on their toes too! LOL Great idea to hang Sylvia’s saying in your craft room! Think I’ll do that too! Blessings Joan! xo Deb

  2. Brenda says:

Happy New Year to you also! I still have not worked on my farmgirl badges. I have and do so many of those things to earn them I am not sure why I do not get around to writing up what I need to write up. One of the problems is I have already done so many of the starter things that I have a hard time going back to the basics to get started what I have already accomplished. How do you think I should start out with because of that? Love all you ideas.

Hi Brenda! Like you I also had already completed some of the first steps to some of my badges. I still submit them and just click the date that is closest to when I completed them. When you write your description in your application you can always include when you started and completed each step too! I’ve done this and so far I’ve still been awarded my merit badges! Good luck Brenda… I’m way behind in submitting some of my badges too.. I think I have AADD ( Artist Attention Deficit Disorder )! Oh, well… the little rabbit trails life takes us on are just too fun to pass up sometimes! Love and farmgirl hugs! xo Deb

  3. Pam deMarrais says:

Hey Deb! Your blog is so energizing! I love your enthusiasm and excitement for future endeavors. I have lots of projects waiting in the wings. It is time for me to make a little list to get me focused on where to start. I am right brained, so I have the creativity; just not as organized about I could be.
Enjoy your virtual course. Have a great New Year!

Hi Pam! So nice to hear from you! Wishing you a wonderfully creative New Year as well! Hope to see you next time you come " home" to the shorelines again!!! xo Deb

  4. Debbie says:

SO excited you are taking the workshop Thursday. As long as the ice doesn’t keep me on the road trying to get home on Wednesday, I will be there too! I think my word for the year may be "Be". Be me, be grateful, just be, etc. I am always doing and sometimes I miss the being part! 🙂 I will keep you posted as the month goes on as to my inspirational word that I land on. Looking forward to sharing farmgirl fun with you in 2014!

    Hi Debbie!

Oh fun! Be careful traveling home… I like your word! Here’s to a great 2014!  Looking forward to more farmgirl fun with you too!

    Hugs,

    Deb

  5. Adrienne says:

I’ll share a few of my favorite quotes for the new year:
"Do or do not. There is no try." Yoda

"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those who neither enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in that gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." Theodore Roosevelt

"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bow lines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the tradewinds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." Mark Twain

2014 was plotted by Thanksgiving Friday 2013 and as new items emerge, they are added to the activities for Mind, Body and Spirit each day.

    Have a wonderful 2014!

Happy New year Adrienne! Great quotes indeed! I especially like the second one… 🙂 All good things n 2014. I look forward to hearing more from you here in the coming year! xo Deb
