September Sands and a Little Farmgirl Romance

Dear Sisters,

Isn’t it amazing how quickly summer begins to fade into fall? One minute we’re knee-deep in summer fun and before you know it that old familiar change in the air blows in with the cool sands of September welcoming us home again. Here on the shorelines, all it takes is one glance at the golden tipped dune grass and the wild rose bushes, now laden with orange rose hips instead of pretty pink and white blossoms to know that glorious fall is on our heels. But, before we dive headlong into apple picking, pumpkin pies, and savory soups. ( all fall favorites at our house) let me tell you why September is my most favorite and cherished month of all… Continue reading

” My garden is my most beautiful masterpiece. ”
– Claude Monet

Dear sisters,

I hope this note finds you all well and enjoying the start of milder weather, cooler nights and the slow, gentle changes of the season. Our daughter returned to school this week and just like that the busy buzz of summer came to a screeching halt. I’m happy to report she’s excited about her class schedule. Get a load of some of the classes she’s taking this year. Psychology, Oceanography, Auto-Cad for Engineering and Design, Algebra 11, Auto Shop, and Honors English. I’m glad she wants to challenge herself by dabbling in a variety of different subjects. I confess, this is not the sort of schedule I would have chosen for myself at her age. I would have been quite happy lying in the grass studying the shapes of the clouds while in full daydream mode and if I’m being honest, not much has changed!

I still like to play with colors and shapes! I think I’ll forever be working on my masters in GIRL GENIUSOLOGY!

My garden flowers are at their peak and now that school is ” back in session” I’ve got some extra time on my hands to fiddle and fuss with them. Come on in for my crash-course in DIY Farmgirl Flower arranging and see 8 unique bouquets! You’ll be amazed at how easy and simple it really is to make your own one-of-a-kind garden fresh bouquets using pots, pitchers, and other vintage vessels right at home. Continue reading

  1. Mary Rauch says:

Wow, I am properly impressed! So easy on the eyes! For my personal taste (only one probably), I was not pleased with the watering can, but that’s just me.
Your flowers and photography are awesome, especially the light on that dahlia!
    Thanks for the visual treat!

  2. Barbara Purvine says:

Wonderful post! The photos are beautiful, and I love seeing simple things become elegant with a simple flower or two (or more)!

  3. Susan Laquintano says:

I have to say that I loved every one of your arrangements. I am very excited about collecting more items to put flowers and herbs in. As far as the glass flower frog, I have seen them before and could not figure out what they were for. Thanks for the info.

  4. Karna says:

Beautiful! Especially in the watercan !!

  5. Marcie says:

Deb, I love all your flowers & containers and I am inspired to try this next spring. Congrats on being featured in The Cottage Journal Magazine, what an honor. I also read your chicken news too. You are a lady of many talents! Your daughter will be fine and study hard and do great things, like her mom. Thanks for sharing so many great ideas.

  6. pam demarrais says:

Deb, your flowers and arrangements are beautiful! You have inspired me to get two things: some dahlia bulbs and a frog for arrangements! I have to confess that I have not made even one arrangement this year; today is the day!

  7. Joan says:

Your flowers and arrangements are superb!!! I have now vowed to try my hand, this next year, at a cutting garden. I love frogs, only wish I would have kept them from my Gram. I loved the article in the Cottage magazine – maybe they will revisit you and show more of your lovelies. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Deb, beautiful flowers, hard to pick a favorite but mine would be the teapot with the autumn colors. I too love flower frogs, my friend has a very cool collection of them, she too has huge flower gardens, you will have to go to her site and visit, Carolina Lily in Salisbury, NC. My favorite thing is to cut fresh herbs and make tiny arrangements in unusual containers. I love letting my herbs go to seed because they always have the most delicate little flowers, even my lettuce when it goes to seed. Great blog. Be Blessed! Neta.

  9. I love them all, but my very favorite by far are the pink and purple dahlias and zinnias… with the touch of yellow thrown in makes it the happiest arrangement! Your ideas are excellent. – Dori –

  10. Debbie says:

Beautiful! I had never heard of a flower frog! Fascinating little helper! Your flowers are so gorgeous. You have a real gift for them. Thanks for sharing all these excellent, pretty ideas. 🙂
    ~Debbie

  11. Vicki Hempel says:

Deb, All the flower arrangements were beautiful. Really loved the one with autumnal colors in the urn shaped milk glass vase. You have provided inspiration for future gardening in the spring and a trip to the thrift store for interesting vases. Thanks for a real day brightener!
    Vicki

  12. Donna Phelps says:

I have a hard time cutting my flowers! I like to wait for more seeds & I know they wont last much longer after i cut them. In the spring I grow pink sweet peas, hundreds, and I do cut bouquets…sometimes. your bouquets are stunning. My favorite was the table with all of them! They are all so pretty in their own way. 🙂 thank you for sharing that post. A great way to start the day in the southwestern desert o Arizona!

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Howdy, Donna! So happy you enjoyed…I wish I could grow sweet peas here. I’ve tried for three years in a row.. I think I start them too late. I won’t give up… I bet yours are lovely!
      xo Deb

Full Blooms Ahead Flower Show

002-001

Dear Sisters,

Oh how I wish you could all come by for a day in the garden with me! The flowers have their best smiles on right now! Despite the buckets of rain that fell on them over the last two days, they’re putting on quite a show! Since we can’t be together ” for real ” this virtual flower show will have to suffice…Kick off you’re shoes and let’s get going. You’re in Blackfoot Farmgirl territory now… Continue reading

  1. Adrienne says:

Your garden looks lovely and I can really appreciate your hard work. I too would leave the fence natural rather than paint it: it will weather in the salt air to what you already have now. Congratulations on the bargain!

  2. Becky says:

Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden with me. The colors are so bright and lush and glorious. A very nice place to relax and kick back…enjoy the fruits of your labor.

  3. Sharon says:

Night gown, Nikon and barefeet – mornings in my garden, especially after a gentle rain. Love your photos.

  4. Sandy says:

    Beautiful!

  5. Your dahlias are always so pretty. I have had a couple bloom, for some reason, a few of mine will put leaves out but never any flowers. (hope I didnt plant them upside down..lol) We too finally got a good rain, we have not had any so far this season. I too go out in my pjs in the mornings. My favorite time of day is between 6-6:30. It is always so peaceful listening to all the birds singing. My garden has hit its peak and is fading now, so I am thinking it is about time to start dividing irises and hostas. They really outdid themselves this year. I love my picket fence, and I wanted to leave natural as well, but hubby talked me into painting with an off white deck paint. That was 5 years ago and still looks good. I will send you a pic via email. As always great blog. Be Blessed! Neta

  6. Debbie, your Dahlias are SO gorgeous. The dahlias that we planted in our Farm Fresh flower garden are not blooming yet – we have hopes that when they do start they will bloom into Fall. Will they?? I love the Cone Flowers too. Just gorgeous! The only blue we have in our flower garden is Blue Sunday Sage and it is quite nice for a little touch in bouquets. And yes, those Endless Summer Hydrangeas are amazing – right now mine are blooming very deep purple. Love this post, can’t WAIT for you to put some of those flowers into bouquets out on the street to sell! 🙂 – Dori –

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi there, Dori! Thank you! Yes, your dahlias will bloom right up until the first frost. Do you get frost in Tennessee? I’ll have to look into the Blue Sunday Sage. I have Russian Sage and Catmint, but both are a bit messy in bouquets. I’ll keep you posted on my progress! Happy Weekend! Deb

  7. pam demarrais says:

Hey Deb! Your garden is luscious! You have inspired me to plant some Dahlia bulbs next spring. I am with you on the chickens digging in the garden. They really help keep the weeds down but they can accidentally dig up tender plants. I let the bantams free range, but the big girls stay in the run. They love watermelon and tomatoes, so I keep them happy that way.
You have so many gifts and talents. I enjoy reading about them and seeing your pics!

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Pam! Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the flower show… Your Paul’s day-lily garden is equally luscious and beautiful. Hope you’re having a great summer! xo Deb

  8. Joan says:

Thanks for the great garden tour, I missed our local garden club tour this weekend so your lovely pic’s helped ease the pain. You are so talented with your pic’s, words and of course the garden. God bless.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Joan! Well, I’m glad I could fill in for ya this year! 🙂 Nothing like a good garden tour to fill you up with ah and wonder… Thanks for the visit! xo Deb

  9. I love your garden! Every time I visit I get inspired to do more in my own backyard farm. I have the same Hydrangeas and I love, love them! Thanks for sharing.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Vickie! That’s great to hear…I think all good gardens happen a little at a time. It’s fun to try something new and different in the garden when inspiration hits. Glad you enjoy! xo Deb

  10. Rebecca says:

Aaaaah! Such beautiful pictures. I love the wonderful flowers you grow. My yard is covered in sunflowers this year, thanks to a chipmunk. He stole sunflower seeds from my bird feeders and hid them in every pot and throughout the yard. They came up in clumps of 12-14 sunflowers. The ones in the yard, I left alone to grow where he planted them, but dug up and re-planted the ones from the pots. So now I have a lovely sunflower garden with only a little work on my part. LOL.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Howdy Rebecca,
I’m imagining your adorable little garden chipmunks planting sunflower seeds in your garden. What a nice gift to you! And less of a strain on your back and knees to boot! What’s not to love about that? Enjoy! xo Deb

  11. Nanette says:

I just love your posts. I’m a wannabe beach goer, but live in the Midwest. I try to get the ocean often, but have to settle for summer lake time. Your garden is beautiful, you are a wonderful photographer. Enjoy the beach for me this year. N

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Nanette, I too grew up around lakes being nearly 5 hours from the nearest ocean. We had many mountain and desert lakes and of course Lake Tahoe to enjoy which we did for many years before moving to the shorelines… Thanks so much for your note and kind words… Always great to hear from you here! xo Deb

Daisies On My Doorstep

009

Dear Sisters,

Whew doggies, it’s HOT!!! Hot, humid and sticky! What am I fussing about the weather for? It’s always like this come 4th of July here on the shorelines. You know what else happens this time of year? The Daisies on my doorstep are in bloom! Would ya look at how happy they look? I guess they love the heat. Me? Not so much. I think I might have to break down and get a string of Hot Girls Pearls for when I’m out communing with the garden this summer! But I digress. I’m always so happy to see the daisies arrive! I didn’t plant them there. The previous owner of our house must have planted them and the last 12 years they’ve never failed to bloom. Not even once. While other perennials in that flower bed have grown root bound and leggy the daisies look as fresh and innocent ( I’m guessing ) as the day they were planted. Why do you suppose that is? I have a theory… Wanna hear it? Continue reading

  1. Alexandra Wilson says:

Nice post, Deb! I had no idea daisies had such a prolific background. What a fun flower. Happy 4th to you, too!
From your Farmgirl sister across the continent, Alex

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Howdy Alex,
Me neither! 🙂 Wishing you a happy 4th with your new little family… hugs to Ava! Give her a tickle for me! Love, Deb

  2. Adrienne says:

Happy Independence Day to you as well. You are blessed with such beautiful daisies. They always make me smile: not quite as impish as pansies with their cute little faces but smile inducing nonetheless.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Happy 4th Adrienne! We are getting rain today after nearly a month without anything worth reporting. Very rare for New England… I’m happy for the flowers today! They were getting parched!
      Have a safe weekend! Deb

  3. ann says:

Wow! Thanks for reminding me of the beauty of these simple flowers….he loves me, he loves me not! Simple, clean, cheerful and fun! I think I’ll go buy a bunch this afternoon! 😀

  4. Gayle Brown Cahn says:

I am thankful for the sources of flower meanings, I want to read those books. I have a garden club at school and we often talk about the history of a certain plant or flower. Aside from the beauty, knowing a secret flower language is exciting!

  5. Peggy Smith says:

Happy 4th Deb, I have the Flower Fairy book, it is such a nice read. I will look into getting the other one.
While I read your letter just now, as you talked about driving up and knowing that was your new home, it reminded me of almost 23 years ago, when the realtor brought me here to my home. I looked down at the 2 1/2 acre property from the road, saw the house and knew right then I wanted to spend my life here without even looking inside the house. it needed a really good cleaning and work but it was all worth it.
I have felt so at home since that day. I am surrounded by woods, only have 2 neighbors.
Life is good and it is the perfect day to celebrate and be thankful for our freedom.

  6. Kathy says:

Beautiful, the yellow flowers by them really set off the yellow in the middle of the white .

  7. Sherry says:

Great post! I love Daisy’s. I just love flowers. Thanks for sharing your beautiful pics and info. too!

  8. CJ Armstrong says:

Thanks Deb! I love my daisies, which are Shasta daisies. I planted then many years ago and I learned, after bringing a fresh bouquet in the house one year, that they are NOT meant for being in the house. I couldn’t figure out that awful smell at first . . . it was they Shasta daisies . . they smelled like stinky feet! 😀
So, they just stay outside in the flowerbed and grace my yard!
    CJ

    • Deb Bosworth says:

That’s to funny Cj! hahahah…. Yes, best they stay outside rather than in! Mine must not be Shasta Daisies, cause they don’t have a smell at all… Hmmm Now I need to go look them up to see if I can find what variety they are! 🙂 thanks for the note! Enjoy your daisies! Deb

Summer Seas

055-001

” The world today, ” Beston writes, ” is sick to its thin blood for lack of elemental things, for fire before the hands, for water, for air, for the dear earth itself underfoot”. 1927

Dear Sisters,

If you’re just stopping by for the first time in a while let me catch you up! Some of us are in the final pages of Henry Beston’s,The Outermost House. And, oh what an adventure it is to live as he did day by day, hour by hour, sometimes minute by minute on the great beach!  Whether you’ve been reading along or not, what could be better than to visit The Cape Cod National Sea Shore after reading about “life in the dunes” in Henry’s, The Outermost House? Grab your sunscreen, your favorite summer dress and join me on the summer seas!

  1. Adrienne says:

I just missed an opportunity to be the docent at the Fort Point lighthouse in San Francisco Bay. It would have been great to live in my RV next to the building and give tours to those who stopped by. The nice part about living here is the ability to be on the shore within seven miles in three directions. Ah! I love your shoreline and hearing about your trip to the Cape Cod National Seashore.

  2. Joan says:

Oh thanks for a wonderful day trip!! I can almost smell the wonderfulness of the shore. God bless.

  3. katie perryman says:

Thanks Deb, so enjoyed this !!!

  4. Pamela deMarrais says:

Hey Deb! Loved your blog! I hadn’t got around to reading it until today, well, because I have been reading the book that you recommended! I am enjoying reading about the sea, especially after returning from my trip to the Outer Banks. The ocean has such a magical quality about it….Beston has such a great way of putting it into words.
Thanks for steering me in the direction of The Outermost House!

  5. Lisa B. says:

    Oh Dear Sister Deb,
I am so inspired to read Beston’s Outermost House and Thoreau’s Cape Cod because of your inspiring blog. I live in Los Angeles, but my heart belongs to rural beaches…we have a multi-generational family beach cottage in Cambria, California but there’s a mystical draw to the eastern sea board that comes over me every summer. Perhaps it was my 7year old summer on Long Island in 1977 with trips to Nantucket and Cape Cod…the vibrant colors, the smell of tar on the warf, the salty air and sea breezes in my frizzy brown hair, the taffy and trying to learn how to needle point for the first time, I believe the yarn was purple and tangerine, the needle was butter colored plastic and grandma (who’s house I live in now) helped me tape the edge. It was in those days that my dad called me a sandpiper because I was always hunched over and looking for a ‘find’ on the beach…my four children are the same…homeschooled on the beach. Today, at 43, the forest might be too far to travel to get away from the noise, but there’s a kelp forest ‘in dem der’ waters, and that’s forest enough for me as I stand on the edge of the Pacific praising God for inventing…beaches that feel more like home than home, and there, I am not alone. I’ll keep following your blog, I’m so grateful you take the time to share and refresh others. Many Blessings to you and yours.

Solitary Dune

078 EDIT-002

Dear Sisters,

Since we last met, June has made her arrival and with her plenty of last-minute late-spring activities. Here at Dandelion House I’ve been sowing seeds in the raised beds and borders, preparing for a yard sale this coming weekend with my momma, and car shopping for our oldest. I’m happy to announce he finally found one that fit his budget and one he loves! He didn’t give into impulses to spend beyond his means and when the right one came along he was ready. Life has been non-stop in our world but I stole away to Henry Beston’s ” Solitary Dune”  every chance I could to finish reading his book, The Outermost House. Have you been reading your copy too? I thought I might have caught a glimpse of some of you walking the beach at low tide, chasing birds into flight just to watch them from their perfect flight patterns, and star-gazing on a perfectly clear autumn night. Come on in and let’s chat about our time away in the dune tops! Continue reading

  1. Oh Deb, how I envy you and your little cottage on the beach. I am so going to find me one somewhere on a beach somewhere someday…lol. Loved your story and I think I will try to read the book as well. Be Blessed. Neta

  2. Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Neta! Until you find your cottage, you can visit mine any ole time! How’s that?
I hope you enjoy the book! Love and blessings… Deb

  3. Gae says:

Greetings Deb: Just love your posts! Our family is able to retreat to our cabin in the Adirondacks (NY), so different than a shore line, but equally an amazing experience with nature. Last weekend we actually saw our first moose!!! I ordered the book, via Kindle, today and can’t wait to start reading.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi Gae!Thank you for your kind words. 🙂 Glad you enjoy your visits here! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the book! Happy Reading! Deb

  4. Henry’s way of writing is to personify nature. He breathes with every life force he encounters which makes his writing so unique. I’m halfway through the book and when I put it down, I find it calls to me. So today more reading. Thank you for introducing the book to us. I long for a house on the beach. We make at least 2 trips a year to the Oregon coast. The Washington coast has a lot of privately owned land. You can’t get to a lot of it. The Oregon coast is public. Lovely, huh?

  5. Deb Bosworth says:

    Sylvia,
A agree totally. I finished the book yesterday morning and I keep wanting to retreat back to my room and escape with him all over again. I’m sure I will at some point. His book is def one you could do that with for many years to some. I’m so glad you are reading along. 🙂 I’ve stayed in Lincoln City on the Oregon Coast and it was wonderful. Enjoy! xo Deb

  6. Laura R. says:

    Hi Deb,
While reading your post, I remembered reading somewhere that man’s fascination with labeling everything in nature, takes away from actually BE-ing with nature. So this : “but my mind doesn’t take hold of that sort of information. It’s like a sieve when it comes to remembering names. For whatever reason, my brain is a sponge when it comes to remembering colors, shapes, sights, sounds and smells very well. Names, not so much!” makes sense to me ! Such blessings you have to experience all that 🙂

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Laura,
Thanks, I feel better about not ” stowing away ” all those names of wildlife now! 🙂 xo Deb

Cottage Days

2149 EDIT 2

Dear Sisters,

I hope this note finds you all healthy and happy for the upcoming Memorial Weekend holiday. A farmgirls work is never done, even on the holidays. There’s still plenty of feeding, planting, milking, cleaning and caring to be done but that can wait a few minutes! I’m reminiscing about Cottage Day’s to come and I’d love some company! We’ve got so much to be grateful for and the beach is the perfect place to find some quiet and remember those who have fought and still fight for our luxurious freedom every day. Come with me and we’ll clear our heads together at the beach! Only one condition. Check your cell phone at the cottage door! No selfies, snap chats, tweets or tumbles allowed!!! Continue reading

  1. Sandy says:

    Beautiful

  2. Adrienne says:

In honor of Memorial Day, I will be going to the Presidio for a ceremony to remember the fallen and place flags on their graves. Tomorrow, however, I will be at the Palace of the Legion of Honor for art lectures and then stand on the bluff overlooking the ocean, Golden Gate bridge, Alcatraz and say a prayer at the Holocaust Memorial. Then I will appreciate all I have from those who gave all to our country.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Sounds like a very full and meaningful weekend Adrienne in a beautiful place. I’ve crossed the Golden Gate Bridge many times! 🙂 It’s an experience for sure!

  3. Bonnie McKee says:

I’m in! I just requested a copy of the book from my local library. Looking forward to my first summer read along with you girls! Enjoy your day! 🙂

  4. Nanette says:

I always love your posts – especially the photos. I’m a “beach girl” at heart living in landlocked North Dakota. Your photos are so refreshing. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I love your prose and photos. Being raised in Hawaii, I long for the ocean. I do not live close enough to the Puget Sound to see it, and it’s a reasonable facsimile to the ocean, but I do take an annual trip to the Oregon coast to renew and refresh. I love smelling the ocean and having it lull me to sleep. It’s powers are deep. I’d love to read Henry Beston. I’ll search for those books.

  6. Lisa says:

I have the wonderful blessing of living along the coast year round. Your description of the sound and ocean is the complete truth. I cherish living here and would never ever consider living any where else. I NEVER take it for granted and always give praises to Our Creator for the beautiful sea. Thanks for sharing!

    Lisa

    • Deb Bosworth says:

I agree… I made my self a promise when we moved to this area 12 years ago that I would never take it for granted and I don’t! It’s a blessing to be near the sea or anywhere you can God’s handiwork in the natural world.

  7. Sharon says:

Just got back from the Outer Banks, NC last weekend and still smelling, feeling and seeing it all as you write. Rereading The Outermost House may help. I’m in.
Henry, Henry – Northern Farm my absolute favorite. I have a 1948 hardback edition. I can’t read his books without notebook and pen. “Then with a swing of the finger,I started the pendulum of the clock, and with the steady tick, the life of the house began to beat. Home again. Home.”
That’s where I am, home again and back to the real world.

  8. Pauline says:

    Hi Deb,

I love the ocean as well. We take vacation almost yearly to the Oregon coast. I love your blog as well and love hearing your stories about the beach activities! However, we have property in Idaho in a mountain region near a very large lake. I keep daydreaming about it and possibly planning for a cabin in the future. Just haven’t gotten the gumption to actually take first steps. We go up there about 3 times a year and kick around, burn brush and trim pine trees. Is that how it starts? I hope so. Thanks for sharing. Pauline in Idaho

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Yep! That’s how it starts…You’re in the courting stages now but you’ll be wedded to that place before you know it! Thanks for reading Pauline 🙂 xo Deb

  9. Betty Benesi says:

I too will try to get the book “Outermost House”. I live in the Santa Cruz mountains in northern California. My little cottage is perched on a hillside with 180 views of the hills and vineyards and gorgeous sunsets. I love my little house. It is such a refuge from my job in Silicon Valley.
By the way, I thought your prose in this article was exceptional:).

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Great Betty! It will be fun to hear everyone’s reactions to the book! Oh, your cottage and surroundings sound lovely. That is a beautiful area!

  10. Don Wilding says:

So glad you enjoyed the program, Deb. I’ll share this link on Facebook.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

I really enjoyed your lecture Don and I could so relate to Henry’s experience on the outer cape in his little beach shack! Thank you for your note! Deb

  11. glenda woodward says:

Thank you. I needed a gental tug back to reality. Being in nature is one of the most wonderful parts of being alive. I live out in the middle of nowhere NV. Not a lot of people, just enough. It is hot here now and will only get hotter until September when it cools a bit down to a simmer. I do my best during these months to let my mind think we are at the beach. Outermost House is a wonderful read and one worth repeat.
My favorite escape is a quiet mountain area not to far away where I can take long cool walks under the trees following the river. I imagine I could just live in the bed of my pick-up all summer but I have animals and such that need to be looked after. A day or two at a time is …Heaven. I love visiting your cottage, thank you 🙂

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Where abouts in Nevada Glenda? I’m from Reno,NV!Yes, even a day or two can make all the difference…:) Thanks so much for your note! xo Deb

      • glenda woodward says:

Down south on the north shore or what used to be the north shore of Lake Mead. The draught has taken our beach ! Pray for rain ( and snow in the rockies and rain and then another few years of snow in the rockies ….) I did live in Ely for a few years. Love the Reno outskirts and Carson City. Imagine I used to live 3 blocks from the beach in Del Mar CA. My parents made that move for me. Dang it.

        • Deb Bosworth says:

Okay, I know where you are now Glenda…Praying for snow, rain and more snow in the rockies… I remember the droughts of the west well. I agree, the outskirts of Reno and Carson City and Genoa ( where I was married ) are beautiful the way they sit at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains…Stay cool this summer Glenda!

  12. Jennifer says:

Outermost House is a wonderful book. I have a cottage on the Cape in Wellfleet (alas, no ocean view) and I reread the book every summer when I spend time there. I’d love to be part of the book club!

  13. Marge Hofknecht says:

You make me drool over your description of a day at the beach! I love the beach and miss it living here in TN. So when I do get to the shore, I pay attention to every detail: shells, waves, texture of the sand, the wind in my hair, the smells. What’s that old saying? Absence makes the heart grow fonder. When it comes to the water’s edge of the ocean, it sure does! I’ll look into Henry Beston.

  14. Peter Wells says:

    Dear Deb,
What pleasant reading here – sort of an early meditation this Mem. Day.
For their anniversary in July 1949, my mom gave my dad an inscribed copy of HB’s OMH. She wrote, “…with an Atlantic of love”.
May you and your family have a perfect holiday.
Ps I saw your comment on HB page

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hello Peter,
Well, thank you so much… ” with an Atlantic of love” …. I LOVE that!
Blessings to your and yours! Deb

  15. CJ Armstrong says:

Well, Deb, like I’ve already told you . . . I’m sure wishing I could come and hang out with you at your cottage. Maybe someday . . . you are so, so very far away from me.

BUT, I’m walking barefoot on the beach so that I can feel the surf wash over my feet, looking for shells and/or sea glass. I love to walk the beach! Swim? Not so much!

Hope you have some wonderful days at your cottage!
    CJ

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hi CJ! That a girl…! I’m like you,,, I’d rather be looking at the ocean than in it at least in this northern Atlantic sea water… It doesn’t really warm up until August! Now, Aruba is another story… that water is beautiful and warm!
I’ll be here when you make your trek east and we’ll have that visit!xo Deb

Thanks for your support of moms everywhere! It’s definitely one of the most important jobs out there. Good luck with the wisdom teeth. Black tea bags were my Godsend when I had them removed. Best,
Alex, your Rural Sistah in AK

    • Deb Bosworth says:

Hey Alex! Glad you enjoyed… I kept thinking of you being at the starting gate as a new mom and how wonderful it is. Black tea bags? I’ll give that a try.. Oh, I forgot to include that the dentist recommended that our son eat an entire whole pineapple the day before surgery. Apparently there’s something in pineapple that helps with swelling? So, of course.. I bought the pineapple! 🙂 Happy FIRST Mother’s Day to you Alex!
Deb, your beachy sistah in MA.

  5. Hi Deb.
I love how you phrased the whole Mom job! I’ve raised two, then two grandkids. Been a lot freer with the grandkids. They lived with me for 6 years. Despite having my freedom cut off when they arrived, I truly enjoyed having another crack at being a Mom. I relish the moments spent with both my kids and the little ones. This weekend is both my daughter’s birthday and Mom’s Day. We will celebrate and I will be thanking God for such a blessing.
I like the chocolate ice cream soother.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

    • Deb Bosworth says:

      Hi Syliva,

I think all of us who are granted the honor of motherhood ( by what ever means it happens) are blessed…I really do believe children are the best teachers. Happy birthday and Mother’s Day to you and your daughter… Just enjoy! Thanks for reading… xo Deb
